IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. I was surprised and a little suspicious to see that Peter closed down very quickly the threads which dared to question Silsden Town Council. Surely we need a healthy debate about local democracy and, as the Mayor and other councillors pointed out, there is a shortage of volunteers to be Town councilors. Could this be something to do with the fact that some of the present incumbents do not set the best example to Silsdeners who might fancy standing? Yes they do a very good job at arranging the Gala and the Xmas lights etc. but surely they also need to attract people with new skills and ideas to work with them and take the town forward into the next decade. The language and attitudes of some of the councillors as demonstrated on Silsden.net is beyond belief and very off-putting to say the least! |

I am sorry but I feel quite strongly about this, there is more work being done by the town council than simply the gala and the christmas lights. The minutes of meetings are available to read on Silsden.net as are the agenda's for forthcoming meetings and members of the public are welcome the meetings. There are also vanancies so if you feel we are not represneting you correctly then why not apply to join? Ranting on the internet is not acheiving anything apart from maintaining your anomymity. |

Sharkbait, I assume the topic you refer to was this, and similar topics that I closed www.silsden.net/forum/philboard_read.asp?id=4474 I will repeat my statement before I closed the topic I understand your point of principal but there are a set number of councillors to make "The Council". There has not been a "full" council for a number of years so there has been no need to hold elections. The Mayor is elected annually and members of the public I believe can attend the council meeting and participate in the vote (if they are a resident of Silsden). If you require information as to when Silsden Council had enough potential council candidates to require an election I suggest you contact the Town Clerk. Contact details here: www.silsden.net/town_council/docs_12/12_notice/COUNCIL_DATES_july2012-13.pdf I think it is unfair to request such information through this forum when there is a formal, and correct, way to request such information. ........................ I will expect to see you at the next council meeting, there will be plenty of seats because the public can't be bothered to go. And if you would like to be considered to be a councillor (this is not an automatic right of passage) you should look at this document: www.silsden.net/town_council/docs_11/11_notice/WHY_NOT_BECOME_A_TOWN_COUNCILLOR.pdf Be quick if you would like to be considered for co-option as when there are too many there will be an election. |

Hermione, sorry to upset you, but you have missed my point - I am trying to be constructive and suggest possible reasons for people not volunteering to do more for their town. I know you do a good job but I think you could be a better team if you attracted some other people as well as cleaned up the language and attitudes of SOME of your colleagues. |

I know you do a good job but I think you could be a better team if you attracted some other people as well as cleaned up the language and attitudes of SOME of your colleagues. i think you will find there has been quite alot of new blood on the council over the last few months ohhhhh of course you dont know because you cant be bothered to go to the meetings spouting that heads must roll is the most alot of people on this forum can be moved to the council do a thankless job and much more than just the gala and lights the reason you dont hear about it is because unlike most politicians they actually do something and are not in it just to do nothing and raise their profile and get their pic in the paper also its not a paid position and they do it for the good of the town There are still positions available on the council so put up or shut up ![]() |

Sharkbait, all town councils & councilors get criticized they are damned if they do,damned if they don't !! I can assure you your town council will listen to any CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.So may I suggest in stead of hiding behind a false name making accusations, that you attend the S.T.C.meeting on Thurs 2nd of August at 7-30pm were you will be welcome to tell the council just what is wrong with their language ?? perhaps you mite even join your town council and do something positive for the town instead of criticizing people who do their best for our town without any payment !! Its very easy to criticize and do nothing !! |

A lot of people, myself included do not have time to join the Council. Perhaps you are the same and people shouldnt knock you for that. So, if you did stand for election what would your manifesto be? |

I agree with Sharkbait. Not everybody has the time, the skills or the courage to be a councillor. There are many ways in which people contribute to their neighbourhood. I live opposite a lady who I have seen spending her time caring for neighbours in need. She doesn't, as far as I am aware, post on this forum but if she did and expressed a view that was not acceptable, would it be right or fair to tell her to 'put up or shut up'? The splendid time we had as a family at the Gala does every credit to those involved including the councillors involved. Could we please now see the quality of behaviour evident in the work that went into the Gala and all the other good work done for the community appear also in the language used on these forums. |

Fair point ealteacher i just get sick of people moaning and groaning on here complaining about how bad the council amongst other things are They dont want to do anything about it just moan and groan and as for people not having enough time to go on the council etc they seem to post on here for hours on end and im sure this isnt the only website they visit There are between 8000-10000 people in Silsden yet when anything is arranged to do anything for the town lights/gala/cleanups etc there are about 10 people turn up to help maximum granted i realise the whole town doesnt post on here but still 10 out of 10000 is pathetic ![]() |

I used to volunteer for things. I did my best but in the end encountered: ignorance, bigotry, cliquism to name a few. Of course there were those who 'did their bit' whatever, but if one dared to question 'the knowledge' or the way certain things seemed to happen then.... well it varied, but I think you can work it out. Unfortunately I was not in a position to make a stand, one does have to work so I was a volunteer, I walked away, no real loss (usually a gain as naturally one tended to cover most individual expenses). I stuck some of these situations out for years, and saw people come and go, so I doubt if I am alone. For many people one bad experience is likely to put them off volunteering, for life. Others seem to make a 'career' of it, and no doubt some of these become the 'problem'. I do not know an easy answer. Maybe I ought to stick my head over the parapet again? |

thankyou Pumbajunior and I appreciate your point of view. What is evident in this thread is the desire to 'take the town forward into the next decade'. Old miner adds a lot of support to the point Sharkbait makes and, interestingly, wonders if he/she should raise his/her head over the parapet again - a credit to this forum, don't you think. |
