This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

I am a full supporter of the Town Council and for all the people who put themselves out for the benefit of Silsden, but I don't think they should claim to be elected representitives as they do in the recent Silsden Town Statement (re the Town Hall).

When was the last time an election for a Town Councilor was held? What is the Term of Office before requiring relection from Silsden residents? Could someone on the Town Council please enlighten us?

I think they are elected for four years at a time Bradford's website has parish election reults from 2011 and 2007.

If there isn't an actual vote they are still elected, I think the phrase is "elected unopposed".

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

I joined a few months ago as there were and still are some vanancies. I am "co-opted" onto the council until we are all for re-elction, it is early so i can't remember off the top of my but there is a date for re-election.

Perhaps if the town clerk see's this thread she will clarify it all for you.

So It looks like our town counsellors are either co-opted or appointed unapposed without election because not enough people want to be counsellors. Well done everyone on the counsel for putting yourselves out and for doing the jobs nobody else wants to do! You have really sparked Silsden up with the gala, bonfire and the festival in the park. Thank you, I went to them all.

However saying you are our elected representives is not true, you should just have missed that bit out.

correct me if I'm wrong but does that mean that until there are more people wanting to be on the Town council than there are vacancys, then there are no elections.

You don't need elections when there are vacancies. I believe the next time elections will will happen (if there are more potential councillors than seats) will be next May.

At the moment there are two vacancies on our town council so if you fancy the job www.silsden.net/town_council/docs_11/11_notice/WHY_NOT_BECOME_A_TOWN_COUNCILLOR.pdf

BTW you do the job for love so perhaps we shouldn't give our councillors such a hard time.

Whats the option?.Hold an election with just one candidate. What a waste of money that would be.

Peter I have nothing but respect and thanks for people who put themselves out to be Town councilers, which is a thankless task I might add.But I still dont think it is right to say that they are elected when no election has taken place for years. And gazzer are you saying that in the parliamentary elections a sitting MP should not have to go up for election if they have a very large majority lets say 40000.That would not be democratic,it would be like what used to go on in the U.S.S.R.

No, I am not saying that at all. But what would the point of an election with a single candidate. It would be impossible not to be elected so why bother with the cost of an election. There isnt a problem with people on the council because there was no opposition the problem is that not enough people want to be on the council

They have all gone through the lawful democratic process that exists in this country.
So that ends this thread
