This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

From the STC agenda of 6 May 2010
silsden.net/town_council/docs_10/10_meetings/STC_meeting_AGMagenda_May2010.pdf sad :(

So the Environment Agency ("It's our job to look after your environment and make it a better place" - Environment Agency - Homepage) haven't got enough money this year to clean the beck out and they have come up with a very strange excuse - see agenda document above.

The worrying thing is they don't see a need to fix the large loose slabs on the lip of the weir, this seems to be very shortsighted to me. Don't these slabs help prevent the weir from being undermined?

Looks like is a DIY project, perhaps we could get a grant. wink ;)

If we get a rumour out that Nick Clegg is in favour of cleaning up Silsden beck then we will have David Cameron and Gordon Brown (well, at least one of the Millibands...) fighting over who can do it.

I believe this is a perfect job for all of the miscreants who are supposedly working on the payback scheme, you know the thing that criminals are given because the prisons, (Doss houses) are to full to take them, they could get into the beck with their wellies on and handball all of the rocks out then with spades dig out the silt.
What do the rest of you think?

On the agenda it says that we don't have enough funds for the beck to be tidied up. Then directly underneath it says that finance needs to be considered for Silsden Cricket club. Why should the town council be funding the cricket club? They've had a new club house which was built for them with the majority of the money coming from the FA? Now they want the people of Silsden to pay for whatever else they want?
Shouldn't the council money be going towards benefitting the community, NOT the minority that play cricket? I would suggest to cricket club, don't be lazy and go raise your own money.

If not for profit, volunteer run sports clubs are not part of the community I dont know what is.
The Town Council should not be funding a tidy up of the beck when it is the responsibilty of EA.

Back on topic razz :p why do we want to clear the beck? I'm not clear about it? Is it to make it look nice again or is it to help prevent flooding, or both, or something else? I agree it doesn't look fantastic with everything that's been washed down at the moment.

Can we get the whole town involved if we can't get funding? I'd get my wellies on and come shovel gravel and stuff. Can't we twist the arms of some local groundworks companies to lend a mini jcb & driver for a couple of hours?

If we can get the advice of the EA for free about how best to do the work then why not take them up on their offer?

Thanks should go to David and Josh Isherwood and Silsden Town Council (and I suppose the Envionmental Agency for allowing us to do it ourselves).

Huge improvement....well done to all concerned, and shame on Environment Agency for not doing it. There are other parts of the beck that need doing, but this is the "showcase" part, and it looks great. Another improvement for Silsden.

Passed the beck today, what a grand job. Well Done to the people that did the clean up.
The area around the beck is what outsiders always comment on, how nice it is around the "duck pond".Well, now it is. Thankyou.

Shimeixiaoxioa, you are referring to an STC agenda (at the beginning of this thread) which was published in May 2010 . Your question should have been the subject of a NEW topic. However, I would suggest you go the Silsden Town Council Meeting in Decemeber and request a public adjournment. You can then put your point of view directly to the Council.
