When is the beck going to get cleared up. Its a right mess outside the Post Office. I know it was "dredged" a few years ago by Nobby Clarke with JCB.The ducks have hardly any water.

Come on Silsden Council get it sorted.

On the Silsden beck theme if you look in the beck behind the two seats (opposite Red Lion) i counted 6 rainbow trout on sun morn about 15in long it will be interesting to see if they are still there when and if it gets cleared out, Have a look and see how many you can count

Is this not what the upcoming culvert repairs are about, due to start in July? Maybe they will clear things up as part of the repairs to the beck structure?

i think i heard the trout are stuck & can't get further upstream due to all the rubble.

great idea titch but i think this time it's going to take a bit more than some willing volunteers, it needs dredging properly with a digger

Is the beck by the Post Office not a ford? Maybe the vehicles obstructing access should be removed and the highways department asked to clean up their 'road'

I have just joined the site! Though I'm only 13, i do like to have an (sort of)active role in the community.

I havn't noticed the beck's ominous appereance or problems! I didn't know there were any fish in the beck and i never knew about the numerous problems. I think CCTV would be a good idea so any trouble causers aern't being stupid etc!

Thank-you for reading!

I totaly agree with you Peter Silsden always get the dirty end of the stick! when are they going to clean out our river Cobby? You can bet that if it was in the centre of Bradford it would have been done within days of it first happening.

maybe it would be better to contact Environment Agency direct, if our local council/Bradford MDC cannot action it? Probably sounds too simple, there will be bureaucracy to go through. There is an email address on their website for enquiries, but can ordinary members of the public write to them about issues like this?

I wonder who has responsibility for the stream and could authorise some volunteers to do some of the work? Then if we could get someone else to take away the debris we could get the job done.

I'd certainly volunteer a few hours labour, even with my dodgy back!

I bet there's H&S and liability issues if the general public do it tho and the council/whoever will be wary of being sued if someone gets hurt.

still waiting for the reply from Environment Agency in Leeds, who are now dealing with my query. It would be a great time to do the work, Peter. The rest of the Town is in chaos, a little more wouldn't matter!

Surely as there is a ford there it is the highways departments job to ckear the route across.

With all the traffic problems I am wondering why 4x4 poseur wagon drivers are not making use of this obvious short cut.

As a biker I make use of the restricted width road under the aqueduct!

Wow!! I have never seen so little water in there, I do know that just in front of the lip of the water fall, on the post office side, is a row of stone flags about 4ft x 4ft each all the way across the front of the weir, they tapered down against the flow and the water would be a couple of foot deep even in mid summer.

We would find good sized trout after they let water out of the res, the trout may be coming down not up.

ishy, just for you a picture of one of the lip flags which was lifted by the floods and NEEDS RELAYING. The ducks find it a nice place to sunbath.

BTW I think the flag was lifted not by the last flood but the one before!

just received a reply from Environment Agency:-

Thank you for your enquiry dated 6 August 2009.
De-silting in Silsden Beck was on the reactive works list last year.
However other work took priority which is why it was not done. We are not aware of any current plans to do the work in the near future.
If you require any further help, please do not hesitate to contact me.

So there it is........nothing will be done in the near future, at least we know! Worth pursuing, anyone got any ideas? I have not yet replied to the email.

One of the town councillors has been chasing this for a long time.

Think it's gonna have to be a DIY job, any volunteers?

ie there any "comeback" if it's done by ourselves? I'm thinking about the H&S brigade, or any other big brother outfits. Would probably have to be done before the monsoon season.

What they gonna do lock us all up or nick us for pinching rocks?

Let's all stop moaning and do it, I can't lift much but I can manage a few rocks one Sunday. Who's gonna organise?

Think that the Environmental Group used to do it.

A DIY cleanup is admirable (it used to be organised by Silsden Environmental Group) and members of Silsden Youth Council and a few others helped.

I think Silsden Town Council should establish the responsibility for maintenance of the beck, or the displaced lip flag may never be replaced. I guess volunteers would also need a bit of help getting rid of the stones and other rubbish.

We are into the monsoon season www.silsden.net/news/2002_02aug_floods/index.htm

Does that mean you are willing to pay more on the precept Peter if the TC takes it on?

The TC could do lots more, but someone has to pay for it, and we already pay enough in Community Charge or whatever it's called these days!

As I understand it below the Post Office bridge is the Environment Agency, above Bradford.
