IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Middleton Mummers Play –Dec.2001 Based on Guysers Play from Underwood, Notts., 1935 & 1936 P.T.Millington Collection (1972, B.L.Hodgkinson) Earliest reference I have found is:- www.archive.org/stream/westridingsketc00burngoog “West riding sketches 1875” Pages, 74 156 231 255 277 298 371 INTERESTING BOOK . PAGE 258, ST. GEORGE AND SLASHER ARE MENTIONED “ St. George, Slasher , the Black Princeand Little Devil Doubt were abroad in their glazed calico and spangles.” Middleton Mummers Annual Tour of South Craven, Sunday before Christmas Eve and is the 10th year of local performances. Performance mid afternoon at Middleton (Cowling not Ilkley) before performing in the pubs of Cowling, Sutton in Craven, Kildwick and Cross Hills we perform at the bottom of Middleton. All members come from hamlet of Middleton or nearby village of Cowling. We perform a combat play featuring St. George, Turkish Knight, Beelzebub, Turkish Knight’s ‘Relation’ and the Doctor. Each year the part of the Turkish Knight's ‘Relation’ features a famous celebrity involved in an important issue of the day. Beelzebub role is to reflect current important news items. This is to give relevance for a modern audience and involves script revision each year. This year we performed at The bay Horse Cowling, Bay Horse Sutton, King’s Arms Sutton, The White Lion Kildwick and finished off at the Old White Bear in Crosshills. this post has been edited 1 time(s) We do it for fun and we don't collect, it's just to give joy to others and celebrate the return of the light after a long winter. Everyone who has seen it has had a good laugh. The more audience participation the better. We have a great time and the Landlady and Landlord at the King's Arms regard the start of their Christmas from when we arrive. They are great hosts. |
