IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. How about like the good old days when the unemployed did a bit of work with a shovel and cleared some of the footpaths in their own town/village (only those not disabled of course) |

Lets hark back even further: "The labourer is worthy of his hire". People on the dole are not able to afford the calories needed for manual work. By all means offer the work but at a sutable rate of pay. |

Dont they get paid for being on the dole then. Its a give a take country surely |

what about prisoners doing it low key ones of course (bring in chain gangs) |

Prisoners are a good idea they look to have a life of luxury with tv, fitness rooms, good food. They should be just the job - low key of course no arrows on their suits. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Well..if the Army can be called out to help in Scotland (and some of them are not long back from fighting the Taliban) then why can criminals not get involved? Might send out a message that they can repay society with a bit of labour to help out in winter conditions. And throw in a few thousand unemployed as well! |

Slight problem, prisoners escaping. There are a few precautions that need to be taken before and during taking prisoners out to do "community work". Armed guards, chains (more serious offenders at the least) etc. Do you think that would be "low key"? Not to mention the cost to re-train and arm guards along with all the lawsuits from prisoners. I don't think this would be viable option. The more likely alternative is to just issue more community service orders for "non serious" crimes instead of locking them up. It would be awesome though if it were possible to have the worst of society repay their debt through this method though! Curse our overly liberal system. |

Nice to see that so many people have cleared some snow. Just think. If we all cleared some snow there would be more people at home this Christmas and not in hospital. Well done to all those who cleared snow. |
