Hi, My great aunt was murdered by her son in Silsden in 1959 / 60 and i am assuming such an event would have made the local press. Can you advise me on who and where I may be able to access this information or get press cuttings from that time.
Many thanks Dawn |

Was the name involved Terry Howard? If so, there are many newspaper reports (Keighley News, Craven Herald and Telegraph and Argus)in the public libraries at Keighley, Skipton and Bradford. Are you near enough to access these? |

Thank you for your quick response. Yes it did involve Terry Howard. Does anyone know what happened following Lucy's death? I live in Harrogate so yes I am in easy reach of the area. Dawn |

Does anyone know if any of the Howard family still live in the area. I am doing family history research but don't know if Jim and Lucy had any other children. I don't know what happened after the murder. Can anyone help ? |

Your best bet is to go to Keighley Public Library (upper floor) and ask to see the Keighley News microfilm for 1959. The murder took place at the end of March that year: Terry Howard was a 20 year old sailor at the time. Was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. The family lived in Walker's Place, Silsden, and there was also a daughter Patricia, two years older. They had only been in Silsden two years apparently, coming from the in the area now. The details of the case are fully given in the press at the time. There may be an on-line archive for the Yorkshire Post, otherwise the KN is your best bet. |

Sorry- some words were mistakenly deleted from that last post. Should read: they had only been in Silsden a couple of years, coming from the Newcastle/Durham area. Noone left in the area now. |

Thank you once again for the info. I too originate from Durham area. I knew that the Howards did but didn't know how long they had been in Silsden. I rang Keighley library to see if they had any info. They were kind enough to take a quick look for me and found an article that was very informative. I am going to Keighley myself soon to look for more press cuttings which there must have been following the trial and inquest. Cheers |

I have today been to Silsden and Keighley Library. Do you know why there are no odd numbers in Walkers Place and also if Mr Howard - Lucy's husband ever lived in Silsden with her ? It would appear from the press cuttings that he was not on the scene. Any ideas on which prison Terry was sent to. |
