The Keighley cougars directors hear of a new young recruit who lives in Iraq. The coach catches a plane to war torn Baghdad and tracks the young boy down. He risks life and limb dodging bombs, bullets and grenades but finally find him and convince him to come to keighley to play rugby league. The boy does a full pre-season, plays all the practice matches and gets picked on the bench in the the first game of the season. Ten minutes into the first half, some one goes down with a severe knee injury. The coach turns to the boy and says "This is it son, go to prop and show us what you can do." The boy proceeds to play the greatest debut game in rugby league history. He scores three tries, makes five try saving tackles, and makes 40 hit ups. The coach tells the team what the boy from Iraq has been through and that he is a model lesson for all. He then pulls the boy aside and says "Go into my office son, ring your Mother and tell her what you did today". He proceeds to do so. "Mum", he says down the phone, "Guess what I did today? "I don't care what you did today his Mother replies. "I tell you what happened here today", she goes on. "Your Dad was murdered, our house torched, our car blown up, your sister's on drugs and your brother's been abducted." "Gee," says the boy. "I feel a bit responsible for what happened". The Mother replies "So you should be. If it wasn't for you we wouldn't have moved to keighley in the first place!!"  |

An Australian is on a tour to the UK via the USA. In the USA he visits a church and notices a golden phone box with a sign, ring God for $50. Throughout the US he notices this phone in a number of churches. Arriving in the UK our visitor arrives in Keighley and visits a local church. There inside is a golden phone with the sign, ring God for 20p. Curious about the lower cost than in the USA he collars the priest and asks why the discrepancy. "Thats easy" says the priest. "In Yorkshire it is a local call" |
