At 10am this morning, waiting to turn right out of Bridge St. down into the main road, the car infront pulled out only to be met with loud horn papping. The car that was being driven along main road to bottom of Bolton Rd had hit his horn. Unfortunately for the old guy driving, very slowly, didn't realise that his indicator to turn left was on, and the person in front had pulled out thinking he was turning into Bridge St.A very near miss, no doubt the elderly chap blamed the other driver that really thought he was turning off. A lesson here on not doing anything until you're sure of another drivers true intentions. |

Too right! Never trust the other driver to do anything right, if anything needs doing do it yourself. |

On most cars the indicators should cancel automatically after use. They do not always do this, my car is a culprit and I suspect it is quite common. Trouble for me is there is no audible indicator that the indicators are running. There might be slight click easily overwhelmed by sundry noises.
It can be a problem for motorcyclists where the solution is to fit an audible indicator. I sent off for a kit for my bike and found it is the same type that reversing lorries use. It is intended to get through ear plugs, which it does.
Now something so loud is not needed in a car, but a bit more noise might help.
This is not an excuse but a reminder that what you might see with an indicator is not guarranteed to be correct. If you do not see the indicator come on then it is always a good idea to assume it might be stuck on. Even then there are those who do not know their left from their right. Follow the old rule that evryone else on the road, oneself excepted of course, is an idiot and you will be safer. Nothing is 100% safe but it is better to increae the odds rather than shorten them. |
