IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

myself and my partner have spent this year developing a website which is very similar to silsden.net and probably hundresds more all over the country. it is called www.whosyourneighbour.com

we officially go live in january, but the site is live now and you can join if you want to. at present most of the people registered are fictional (test data).

i live in silsden and my partner lives in addingham. the site is a national site, but we have decideded the best way to get users is to develop a core of users in a specific area. since we live here we will be launching in silsden and then addingham. we will be doing a leaflet drop to most houses in these areas.

i would be happy to hear any comments you have on the site. it aims to carry out many of the functions of this site, but also a whole lot more.

thanks
john

The big difference of your site compared to this (and many more like this) is anonymity…… I feel confident ranting on in a site like this and find I can give more input as no one has a clue as too who or where I am.

I can’t fault the way the site is set out. Lots of advice/info. I also like the concept of what you are trying to achieve, creating discussion and good neighbour mentality.

The info required to make this work (personal details) will work well for those interested in achieving your sites goal. However in the ever-increasing proliferation of identity theft I won’t be joining myself.

I wish you all the best…….

thanks for reply BBoogie

most sites out there offer anonymity - its the way we seem to like our society . but that is part of the reason for the site, to break down that anonymity.

i understand that is going to be the biggest hurdle to over come, but reckon (hope) there are enough people out there who would be happy to make greater connection.

as for id theft, well it cant really happen. we have just decided to not allow addresses to be displayed, except where you come from. so you would be BB from silsden for example. yes there would be more info about yourself (if you chose to put it on) such as your job or what you like doing. i think you have more chance of getting your ID stolen out of your bin that off any web site.

it's still a valid point as that could well be the perception of most people out there, which means we are not going to get any where.

i will be doing a flyer to all houses in silsden in jan to start the ball rolling.

I take on board that I would only be required to put on there what I like, and not have to provide certain info just to become a member.

However the example I came across for the BD20 area showed too much info for my liking.

The criminal element could trace the address from the picture of the house. They could then sit in a car opposite and wait until the only two occupants leave for work. They know what the occupants look like as their photo’s are also on the site. They also know that there is no dog to be wary of. The male is self employed and they both participate in the game of squash in Ilkley (not Keighley) and both enjoy travel (assume from wording abroad as apposed to UK). All this personal info could make the criminal think not only is the house an easy target but the occupants appear to be reasonably affluent and therefore have nice things worth taking such as large screen TV, latest DVD player and DVD’s. For definite they have a computer…….

I’m afraid it’s this sort of criminal element, and worse probably as I’m not a criminal so I am not capable of considering all the cons, that will still not tempt me to join.

But again I applaud your attempt to improve a sense of good neighbours. Your hearts and minds are on the right track.

I have to confess to having some of the concerns that 'baldybogey' has suggested.

A week ago I thought identity theft was something on the tv, but after over a £1,000 was skimmed off a credit card by hacking in to a well known website I purchase things off I have much different thoughts.

I will be very wary of personal details over the internet in future.

BB

yes that is me on the site. if i was to take down the picture then there would be no way to trace me to my house. we dont imagine many will post up pictures. however if it took off and in a few yrs we had the country covered then it may be more acceptable to put up a family picture.

what you say about the crime element being attached to the site because details are posted, i have to say i dont think it will happen. you can argue any situation could arise because of details on the net and yes it could happen theoretically. posting my house does pose more risk as you describe, but i am happy to live with that. if i was in london i may be more worried, but i live in silsden - not exactly a crime hotspot (i used to work in house insurance so know the rating areas and silsden is nice and low).

if i was a burgular and saw my info, why would that make it easier to break in to my house ? all of us do activities, work or go on holiday, so will be out a fair bit. only professional burgulars would bother to follow us to the squash club after recognising us from the site (my car isnt there so would that make it a bit harder for them). we live in a terrace, have an 8 yr old tv, no dvd, and hardley any jewellery - only that worn my the misses. so i dont imagine for one minute we would be targeted by a professional outfit. obviously the households who do have a bit of money/jewellery (because that is what pros steal, not electrical items) may join, but probably wouldnt put up a photo.

what i have tried to outline is your scenario is very unlikley to happen when you think about it. and if we didnt put up any photos at all would certainly never happen.

using the net to buy goods/services is the same as using your C card to buy flowers over the phone. i just cannot see how it can be any more dangerous. you are going to run into conmen in society, be it on the net or handing over your card at the petrol station. i have no fear using my card on the net because its insured by visa. we bought some item on holiday this yr and never received it. just called the bank and they refunded the £65 straight away - simple.

ps i am at home all day so all you burgulars can P*** off. happy :)

BB

you can over come those inhibitions happy :) you dont have to post up any info about yourself. just think of the benefits.

i lost my cat recently and wanted to ask everyone if they had seen him. we did, but couldn't knock on every door. eventually he returned with a broken leg and is now a tripod. If (and its a big if) everyone was on the whosyourneighbour site we could have done a post there and maybe got some feedback. what about these other benefits:

sell any item free locally

do you fancy doing something new ? maybe you want to try parachuting but dont know how to. what if someone on the site is an instructor. you could email him/her and get loads of advise on what to do and then maybe walk round and have a chat.

do you want to help people ? you could register your avaliability and may match up with someone a couple of streets away.

do you hate washing your car ? get in touch with some young boys who fancy earning some money.

in the coffee break section, you can discuss any subject there - and that bit is anonymous. it is designed for people and their life circumstances. for example, talk about unemployment, depression, disability, old age.

we realise people live around us - often never coming out of their houses - living lonley lives. there are sites out there to talk about these things, but they dont allow for people to form real relatonships with others like them because of the distance issue. our hope is this section may bring people going through a bad time in touch with each other and then eventually meet up.

we want to do a neighbourhood security forum where people can talk about stuff going on in their postcode.

the site is only partly based around looking at who is living around you. it is really a meeting place to draw everyone together in order to organise things, talk about issues, meet people.

convinced ?

WOW

You did ask what we think, so I told you. If you don't like constructive criticism then don't ask for it.

I think you also missed my final point on both of my posts which where positive remarks, as you chose not to mention or thank me for these.

i thought i was coming across with humour. sorry you took it like that. i wasnt having a go or anything, just trying to see if i could change your mind about joining.

ill get me coat.

ps. i wanted peoples views about the site, which i thanked you for in post 5. i also wanted to discuss the issues a bit further. i thought thats what was so good about these bulletin boards. it doesnt seem that others want to come into the discussion, so will thank you BB for commenting - it is very useful.

One of the reasons that I am reluctant to make comments was your response -

as for id theft, well it cant really happen. we have just decided to not allow addresses to be displayed, except where you come from. so you would be BB from silsden for example. yes there would be more info about yourself (if you chose to put it on) such as your job or what you like doing. i think you have more chance of getting your ID stolen out of your bin that off any web site.

I found that just a little naive. I would be concerned at any website that appeared to treat security with such a cavalier attitude.

Alan

there is not a lot more than we can do regarding id theft. our data is secure, so no one will obtain details from our storage. as for the site, i still dont see how peoples id will be stolen from listing your limited details. your point about security may well prove to be our stumbling block.

still think you are more likley to have id stolen out of your bin than off the internet.

We'll obviously have to disagree then!

I don't think most of the big users of the internet would agree with you, most certainly the company I work for with some 1600 users wouldn't!

Nobody can sensibly make the statement that their site is secure to all threats in my opinion.

Alan

our site is not storing any more info than if you buy an item of clothing (name address). everything you buy on the net is stored.

all i can say is that the basic data you give us to join is safe. as for info you decide to put on there about you and family. This will be seen, but you have control over this. You choose what you want to say to everyone.

the security threat from not protecting users details and users posting info about themselves are two seperate issues - but obviously related.

people who are averse to using the net for buying something or banking will never join a site like ours - but these will not be our target market.

If I can interject at this point, I can see where both sides are coming from.

People are more and more concerned about identity theft and fraud. This is good because it makes people more aware and less likely to be careless.

Ultimately we all have to choose what sites we are happy to sign up to. A site like marsadays wouldn't worry me too much as you can put as much info or as little info as you like on there.

Photo's can be whatever you want and don't have to be your house. You could take a picture of yourself in your back garden or use a photo from your holidays...whatever.

I'm not blase about security. I know it's important and I had a site of mine hacked last year when I thought it was secure, luckily no damage done and I found and fixed the hole.

I think marsadays comment is true, I could more easily commit id theft by going through someone's paper bin than hacking a site and would probably come up with bank / credit card statements and other similar details much quicker.

Just my 2 cents anyway.

"jonno" read the sites terms and conditions re future charging and then decide what information they may hold on you.

The character who hacked my credit card account through a famous mail order site and spent £2k would have had difficulty going through my bin as he was in the USA!

I found some of the responses in this thread from the site a little flippant on security to say the least!

Thanks Jonno. You summed up the situation pretty well there.

This is just an update to let people know the site has taken off pretty well. many people have registered in this area and have left some basic personal details about themselves. Some are not using their surnames to describe there household, which is perfectly fine. one guy has posted a picture scene of silsden to represent their house which i think is great.

My wife has found another girl to go jogging with and they met for the first time this week. she lives up the road from us. and i have a new recruit for my football team, but yet to meet.

we have members in oxford, london, barnsley, st albans and more. Most are posting a little about themselves, which we are surprised by as we expected most to be fairly anonymous. it will be a lot of hard work to get the site up and working as we want it - probably 2 years at least - but we are happy after 4 weeks of being live.
