IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : a statue for silsden |
| eddy |
now skipton's getting a freddie statue, who would silsdeners nominate as their hero? and i'm not suggesting we should have a statue. |
| Bob T |
Horace and Nellie Fortune .Non cobbydalers will have to do some reserch on this one |
| pumbajunior |
i would say the obvious choice would be one Mr D Lampkin |
| robin |
The first British born Woman MP (bearing in mind Nancy Astor was American) Mrs Wintringham was born is Silsden. That's History |
| wahiba |
Didn't one of the big clothing chains originate in Silsden? Personally a Lampkin one would be my choice, but three generations; Arthur, Martin and Douglas. |
| hermione fraggle |
@ Wahiba - I like that idea. Would be popular with folks of all ages I am sure. |

dont forget Frankie wainman and junior both world champions. also paul newby another world champ; |

Sir Henry Price en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Sir_Henry_Price%22 the wikipedia entry needs enlarging. I started it as it was not there, surprising really as I believe he started the cheap suit trade. Also commemorated with a garden named after him at Kew gardens. Might even be a statue somewhere. |

how about the first mayor of silsden |
| Loobster |
Why not have a scupture rather than a statue of someome that only means something to a few people the sculpture could depict various aspects to do with the history of Silsden and Cobbydalers know the type of things I mean it would be different get noticed, could even be modern take on old stuff |
| alan |
quoteNow let me think, who could that be? ![]() |
| alan |
Like a ten foot high clog, 'loobster'? |
| Loobster |
Sounds a bit dutch to me Alan clog irons, nails, weaving, etc etc |
| alan |
Oh dear 'loobster' don't you know your history ![]() To quote - Shoe making is also recorded as an early form of manufacture within Silsden. This is presumably related to the tannery at Town Head, just outside of the conservation area, where leather working is documented as early as 1740. However, it was nail and clog making that were to become the major industries of the town; they too had their roots in the ‘cottage’ industry tradition of the eighteenth century and were first mentioned in 1761. |

Why do we want a statue? It would soon become an eyesore, covered in bird poo and graffiti. If there is any spare money around, why not put it so a better use, provide somewhere for the youths to go away from the street corners, if you want then place a plaque on it dedicating it to whoever, but please not a statue, especially not one of any political figure. |
| offcumden |
I think this is possibly all down to the statue manufactures attempts to get more business, there's even a proposed statue of a dog now! www.grough.co.uk/content/view/883/ |

if we have the first mayor of silsden we are back to Nellie Fortune |
| grandad |
coby 1, I am afraid you are in error, she was a chairman we didn't have a mayor until the council became a Town Council, before then it was Urban or Parish council. |
