I don't know I walked past it at lunch time on Tuesday and they were locking the place up, seemed a bit odd to be closing at lunchtime |

The cafe was not viable because of the lack of parking. It has also been on the market for more than a year, perhaps they have sold it at last. |

Workers from the local businesses obviously prefer sandwiches as the bakers seem to be thriving. I think with people watching what they eat more there will be a general decline in the 'greasy spoon' type of cafe.
Times they are a changing.
Mind you, with the price of petrol going up maybe people will be walking more, burning off the fat, and then will eat again at greasy spoons without parking. |

I do walk up into Silsden a lot, but I am not a bacon sandwich eater but I do use other cafe's. I would have thought there would be lots of folks who still like a morning bacon or sausage sandwich and even one for lunch. It's a shame they are missing out because of parking as surely ost areas of Silsden are in walkable distance of the shops, and for those with mobility problems there is plenty of parking. |

Such a shame that they have had to close. I don't think it is so much that people aren't using it, so much as the rent that is payable. Perhaps we should be looking at laying blame on Landlords charging megga bucks. When rents are so high, people must have to take an awful lot over the counter to pay their way, rent and utility bills, no wonder so many have to close. Don't lay all the blame on locals not using them, delve a little deeeper. |

Bradford council have over the years done away with car parking area's in Silsden and not replaced any. There used to be 3 parking spaces outside Twiggs which was also used to slow doen traffic through the town and the Elliott Street car park became just street parking which was further reduced by so called traffic calming. When parking is removed there is never an attempt to replace it. |

They were removed because cars got wider. If a car parked there traffic came to a halt because two cars could not pass without knocking a door mirror off. |

Of course there is. Trouble is they have to:
a: walk. b: press a button on a machine. c: even pay if over half an hour.

Especially the right to park anywhere!!!!!!!!!! |

Don't get me wrong I have a car as I work shifts at a hospital in Leeds. But I am not that reliant on it that I am going to drive it into Silsden, I have used it a little more recently as I have just had major surgery so I have at points been a less mobile than usual, to be honest I have discovered it is much more hassle to drive up, try and find a park than it is just to step out of my front door and use my own two feet. We are getting to be like the Americans (and yes I have been there and seen it, where they drive from store to store, to park outside to save using their legs.
We are lucky in Silsden that we do have shops and services and I do try to use them. I think one of the problems is that Silsden is being advertised by estate agents now as a commuter town, and whilst yes I do commute I use local shops and support things like the gala and christmas markets and I also been out ad about litter picking and such, but a lot of commuters I am guessing just used little towns like ours as place to sleep and shop in Leeds or Bradford and go out for evenings out in Leeds or Bradford. Thuis is only going to become more prevelant as the town expands, I am not from Silsden I only lived here for 6 years, but I moved here because it had lots of local shops and services and it has a village community feel. |

I have a car too, and a motorbike, and a push bike, and a pair of feet, and a bus pass. For any journey I tend to use the most economical and practical, which means mainly walking within Silsden.
As for Silsden being a commuter town, well that is why we came from nearer the centre of Leeds nearly 20 years ago now. It was the recently re-opened station that did the trick. I even used the cycle hutches when they appeared. In the summer i used the motorcycle, having worked out that one could go cross country as far as Cookridge before the traffic trail into Leeds.
If it is available in Silsden I tend to use it. Sainsbury's et al lost out a lot when the Co-Operative moved from their shed to the present premises.
PS - sorry for wandering off topic, forgot this was the Cobbydale Cafe. Although, was it not a Bistro at one time? |
