A comment was posted in another section on here about immigrants being given low paid jobs in the mills. I feel I must record my thoughts on this matter. Having worked in Textiles along with my other half, I'm sorry to say I do not agree with people who make that statement. We have both worked with immigrant workers, doing the same jobs, and believe me, I wouldn't say we were poorly paid by any stretch of the immagination. Years ago, a lot of young people chose to go into the mills because the pay was BETTER than other jobs. So where do we get that train of thought from. |

Shame the mills are (or have) all shut down. I personally blame the minimum wage, because how can a company afford todays minimum wage which is over 6 quid now and still make a profit to expand and grow..... It's fine if you're a millionaire who can throw money at the business but not if you're a new start up.
Second thing that in my opinion actually kick started the recession was the mandatory business rates on all occupied and unoccupied properties......
New start ups are the renewing blood of the economy so now we are in a recession and drowning because we have no new life blood |

The most significant reason behind mills closing, was the fact that the eastern countries were on slave labour wages, we just couldn't compete on price. Also, the decline of the woollen industry had a lot to do with the casual clothing boom. How often do you see people in slacks and jackets? Only a few high end companys are now in business, shame really, an awful lot of skilled people made redundant over the years. |

As I understand it there was a labour shortage in the UK after WW2. We kept the German prisoners as long as we could but but eventually had to let them go home - well most, around 75000 stayed.
It probably is a misconception that the immigrants came for 'low wages', they came because they were needed. My mother in law came from Austria in the 1950s and eventually worked in the mills.
Of course most immigrants came with the idea of making a few bob and then going home rich. Tends not to happen.
Immigrants that come for work are known economic migrants as opposed to political refugees. It is something that this country has lived with for hundreds of years. People have complained about for as long, but it is obviously not in our national phycee to go down the final solution route so we adapt and absorb.
It is actually that ability to absorb that creates all the problems. Migrants go through phases and one phase is establish their identity. Hence all the current Mosque building and funny clothes wearing. But it is a phase as absorption into the host community then gathers pace.
Immigrant so called 'community leaders' are usually appalled when this happens and this attitude creates a lot of personal problems. However the British in their inimical way overwhelm all who come here. In the end only very small minorities of any immigrant group stick to the 'tradional' ways.
It is our strength and our future. France always fights it, and fails. We absorb, and progress.
have you not ever wondered why the English state has been continuous for over 1000 years? No other nation comes anywhere near. |

OLD MINER and LOCALMAN
Old Miner please feel free to join into the post, but spouting a load of facts which have some relevance, but is not adding to a post does not help! If they are not your own opinions you should give references (this is not an encouragement for you to continue disrupting posts).
Localman please do not disrupt the post and change the subject. Perhaps we should all read the topic title before posting.

Peter - can you not just let conversations flow naturally instead of constantly trying to moderate them into a tight line of discussion? Any public forum is supposed to be about views & opinions of individual members. So long as the discussion doesn't descend into personal attacks, what's the harm? |

A forum for local views and news YES
BUT when you hijack the topic and loosly link it back to the topic in hand that is not helpful, hat... This feud has been going on for a while now and something has to give.
Peter is right to moderate ... Eh... That's his job and every forum has one. Peter is trying to stop it ascending into caos like other posts....
I know I'm talking off topic but blimey .... Try to be nice .... I think it takes nothing to do so and you could make someone smile.... And what's that worth?
Peter feel free to delete my reply aswel because it is of topic and basically because you can...... This is not a forum based on democracy.... Funny how we all have lots of views on politics but discuss them in a undemocratic forum.... Loli
Whaffling on a bit..... Off for a walk |

I agree with golden oldie about this topic but I must point out facts that old minor keeps putting out, in the topic houses to be built in silsden he states bradford immigrants came because tory mill owners wanted cheap labour (the true fact was a shortage of mill workers as we had full employment then) he then states in this thread that there is a misconception that they came for low wages then some how links immigration with german POW being returned to germany the number of british POW coming home far out numbered the german ones going home so the facts he tries to state do not hold up he just contradicts him self all the time. |

As Golden Oldie has answered the question on why the mills closed I will let this thread continue on your thoughts on how this forum should be run, what is acceptable and what is not.
BUT if this spills over to other topics I WILL delete your comments. |

Peter, I say just flippin delete em and if they keep doing it ban em for a week.
I'm a member of lots of different forums and if people like localman and oldminer hijacked threads on those forums like they do here they'd not be tolerated, I think you have a very light touch when it comes to moderation.
I for one would not like to see your forum descend into chaos.
People just need to use some self control, for example I could have chipped in about the UK being a sovereign nation, but that's off topic so I resisted, even though it's something I'm really interested in.
If localman wants a discussion about politics then he can start his own thread and take it off on whatever tangent he likes.
Just my own grumpy old guy opinion for what it's worth.
Oh, as well, people should really backup their assertions with sources, I get tired of hearing rhetoric being spouted when people are clearly just repeating sound bites from telly, radio or newspapers when they don't really know the full story at all. |
