Topic : What a waste of £19million |

Plans for £19 million re-use of derelict Keighley College site come under fire as artists' image is revealed The plan is to move all council facilities into one building, this is our money Bradford are spending. If this goes ahead they will be left with a load of ex-council buildings with no hope of selling them off and apart from the building project it won't create any new jobs. Unbelievable! goo.gl/CcorgW But he [Kris Hopkins] said: “This is a town centre location and given the growing strength of our local economy, it would surely have been an attractive site for a private sector investor to acquire and develop. “Given the scarcity of resources which Bradford Council constantly complains about, I find it baffling that it can suddenly find significant public funds to build new shiny offices for itself and its partners on a prime site, close to Central Hall and the hugely discredited civic centre. “This money would have been much better spent saving our tourist information offices, Haworth Fire Station and children's centres.” |

peter is this the building our tory ward councillor has been trying to sell off for ages? for those of you who dont know its cllr andrew mallinson. |

Skippy is right "The Mallinson Project" is to bulldoze the building and leave hoping someone will buy the land. Keighley's very own hole in the ground like Bradford had for years. Mallinson is not even a councillor in Keighley but is sticking his nose in from another pie that he has his grubby fingers in...this time Keighley Town Centre Association """"But Councillor Andrew Mallinson, a member of Keighley Area Committee and the Town Centre Association, said little had changed since a previous council statement was issued six months ago. He said something needed to be done urgently. "This is a prime site in the centre of Keighley and it needs a flagship building," he said the Conservative.""""" |

It will be just another waste of out money, just like it was with Silsden Town Hall. |

That site is a mess. It is a combination of an old and new building. I suspect the old part is probably listed. From my one visit when it was a college I discovered that the new building was a hopeless place. Demolishing the 'new' part makes sense. A decent architect could no doubt design a building blending old and new. Goodness knows who designed the current mess. Probably the best solution is to create accommodation units.Keighley has sufficient retail units. I doubt entertainment would be viable. Office needs I have no idea about. Who owns the site? If it is the state then just flog it off to highest bidder. All those entrepreneurs will be fighting to buy it and make millions to be salted away in some tax haven. |

This is the suggested replacement, doesn't look much different from what's there at the moment. The new plans call for a four-storey building occupying the entire footprint of the North Street site, with a ground-floor covered car park, and offices above, to be used as a Community/Public Sector Hub bringing together several organisations. The plan states: “Although no detailed design has been drawn up, it is expected that the building will be of a contemporary appearance using modern materials but sympathetic to the surrounding architectural landscape.” £19 million for council offices More details here goo.gl/CcorgW |

ONE of Keighley’s most regrettable dates is March 4, 1962, when its Mechanics’ Institute was gutted by fire. Opened in 1870, it was arguably the town’s most impressive building, its clock tower a focal point. In the small hours of that Sunday morning, after a Saturday-night dance, the flames shot 300 feet into the sky as 75 firemen battled the blaze. Bitter cold froze water from their hoses, yet the heat cracked a shop window on the opposite side of North Street. The burnt-out shell would not be demolished until 1967, together – sadly – with the still-intact tower. Allan Hargreaves, long-serving Keighley News photographer, is said to have considered this his best-ever picture. |

£19 million plans for former Keighley College site are approved www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/14620158.__19_million_plans_for_former_Keighley_College_site_are_approved/ It looks like Bradford are determined to waste money on projects which will never see a return. This will put lots of public services in one building BUT what will happen to all the buildings it replaces, they will never be able to sell them. What a waste of money! quote |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) The old section, an L-shaped building surrounding the car park, was once Keighley Boys Grammar School and stood next to the Mechanics Institute. The four-storey block fronting onto North Street and Cavendish Street was added in the 1960s when the building became Keighley Technical College. Keighley News ![]() |

Back in the 60's when I went to the Keighley College, we did some of our lessons in this old Grammar school building, although I didn't appreciate it at the time it is a great building, and must not be demolished. |

The committee meeting also heard the site, which includes a 1960s building and three others built between 1886 and 1932, will not be listed by Historic England. |

Unless the buildings are of historic relevance it probably the best solution. Maintaining and updating a building just because it is old is not always worth it. |

So who decides? why not knock gone the houses of Parliament, they need lots spending on them and nothing of any use comes from them, lets get rid of them and build a new building in the centre of the country, I.E. Yorkshire. It would be a lot cheaper. |

Why not? Most of it is Victorian imitating earlier eras. In some ways it is the availability of new technologies that allows so much old stuff to be maintained. It is a myth that older technologies that seem to last are actually better than New kit. Much that has is because it was over engineered. |
