My Mum has been delving into our family history and found that my Great Grandmothers family came from Silsden. She found a record of them living in a place called Back Lane in and around 1841.

Have tried to locate Back Lane on a map but cant find it. Does anyone know where it used to be?. Many thanks

Haven't been around since 1841 -honestly!- but Back Lane from those times is today's Highfield Lane. It was full of old stone properties with steps (most of them used as lodging houses)as well as a very large Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. There is a great pic of Back Lane in Neil Cathey's book "A Pictorial History of Silsden".

Many thanks. Now I`ve got a fair idea where it is, I might come over and have a look. Meant to pay a visit a couple of weeks ago when Oldham were playing at Keighley Cougars but quite a few of our party got a bit drunk (commiserating our loss at Cougar Park) so we had to make tracks and get them back over the Pennines. Now I know how the Silsden-Oldham connection came about, I`ll be taking a keen interest. May be back to ask for some more help if that`s alright?. Once again, Thank you. Best regards Karen happy :)

Karen may still be able to obtain a copy of Neil Cathey's book which has pics of Back Lane and also the old Wesleyan Chapel there - ask at the post office, where his brother is postmaster.
The old Back Lane was much longer than the present Highfield Lane (it extended into what is now the Hillcrest Avenue area)but Karen will still find evidence in Highfield Lane of a few of the buildings which were there in 1841.

Sorry it`s been so long since I was last on here (had a bit of of trouble with an annoying Brain tumour that I had to get rid of angry.). Would anyone know if the book by Neil Cathey is still available to buy in your area. If so, could any of you point me in the right direction?.
Thanks
Karen

I think it's out of print now and there isn't an ISBN number. I have seen it come up on Ebay a couple of times but the final price was not cheap!

There is a copy in Silsden library but that probably won't help if you live away from the area.

this post has been edited 2 time(s)

the 1982 copy of silsden a way of life(PUBLISHED BY THE SILSDEN CHAMBER OF TRADE has a map in the back of it and it shows back lane as continuing from hayhills road up the back of hillcrest and up the track and footpath at the back of west dene and up the side of the new estate at the top of hillcrest.there are a couple of pictures of houses up back lane in NEIL CATHEYS,a pictorial history of "old cobbydale"published in 1979,dont know if any copies are still available but as previous quoted on this thread there are copies at silsden library.
