At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : would the citizens of silsden like a market?? |
|
alliecoward |
how many people in silsden think it would be a good idea to have a market? and if so what should be silsden's market days, where should it be and anyone any idea how to get the ball rolling? |

I must have been typing when you posted this, the bell square car park would be ideal for a monthly farmers market, the old business watch and the majorettes have used it in the past for functions, all we need to do it figure out how to organise it ! |

If the car park is used for the market where are all the customers going to park? Who would then be the customers? Market stall holders are not coming for a few customers. |

any ideas of other venues or alternative parking wahiba? |

how about opposite the petrol station where the caravan sales used to be? or on belton road - plenty of parking down there |

Really up for fresh fruit and veg, good bread locally produced. At the moment shop out of town for most of these goods. I believe it will be good for Silsden and will add to it's character. Totally up for it. |

The Belton Road idea is a good one, the sunday market could be in the industrial estate area, plenty of parking nearby, including the field opposite Marsel at the entrance to Belton Road. In fact the council could buy that field and make it into a permanent 200 capacity car park with people walking up into town, or a park and ride.....Jackson's are nearby, and could provide the vehicles....end of all parking problems in Silsden! And why not put a roundabout at Belton Road and do the job properly for the future? |

the general consensus is it would be a good idea for silsden to have a market, especially if local produce was used. now anyone got any ideas how we go about getting one?? |

o.k everyone here goes, we have managed to secure a market for silsden hopefully beginning april/may.It will begin with once a month for 6 months and if successful will be increased. Before the negative comments start coming,it is not costing silsden anything, it will be local produce/goods, and all local busineses will have the opportunity to participate should they so wish. There will be approx 20 stalls in wesley car park, and again before the moaners say where will people park,if you live in silsden... walk! if it really takes off park and ride has been suggested amongst other ideas, but first and foremost we need your support.if you think it's a good idea for silsden, to bring more people here to use our businesses, then could you please say so on here,or we will be out and about over the next two weeks asking the public for their views. If we get the support the markets manager will go ahead and silsden market will begin.as I said before please don't critise and come up with complications just yet..let's give this a chance, and if it works after 6 months they are willing to increase their days here.It will initially be once a month and days are yet to be decided, although saturday seems favoured at the moment. |

OK, I think Sislden is to small to justify a market, but I am quite happy to be proved wrong and will walk to it when it happens. It is better to have tried, and failed than never have tried at all. |

I'll take that as support wahiba thankyou. |

A big thumbs up. If enough local (Steeton/Crosshills/Addingham etc.) people turn up why shouldn't Silsden be the ideal place. Of course we're big enough we just need the support of everyone. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) not up to us who gets priority...HOWEVER... we are actively talking to businesses in silsden and taking the details of those interested to pass on to the market manager.Myself and councillor maddocks will be out and about this saturday again asking for views, and taking details of interested parties. |

I THINK IT IS A GREAT IDEA. SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES, AND FOR CONVENIENCE. WOULD BE A LOT EASIER THAN HAVING TO TRAVEL WITH CHILDREN ON BUSES. I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES THAT ARE LOCAL TO US. |

Well done to the ones you have got up and done something about bringing a market to Silsden. In general I personaly think it could be a great idea. However ( sorry to be the one folks) I do think we need to look ahead at what might happen if we don't look at the bigger picture. As most of our shops are family run buisness, can they afford the staff to split up on a saturday ( their busiest day)to run a stall? or have any of our butchers got movable refridgeration needed to sell meat produce from a stall?. I only ask because If control of the market is down to Bradford and their objective is to fill stalls, what is to stop veg or butcher stall holders comming in and undercutting the local traders who are the backbone of our community.I would hate to see local shops close down and then stall holders pull out leaving Silsden looking like a ghost town. I know this is an exageration but you know what I mean. I am not being negative about this, I do want to see a market, but one that has goods you can't buy in Silsden. |
![]() |
alliecoward |
i would'nt worry too much about staff being split up on a saturday, as the majority of businesess close saturday...we are trying to bring people in to silsden in the hope that when they come for the market they will have a wander around the town.If the shops are shut....well! |
![]() |
Marmate |
Actually, most businesses are open until saturday lunchtime - it is only really the solicitors, banks and a few others that close and they don't have market stalls! And there is a concern for the veg shop and butchers (all open on Saturday)as most markets have a few of these! |
![]() |
alliecoward |
o.k guys let's look at this realistically. If someone was to buy a vacant shop in silsden and turn it into another fruit, veg,or butchers shop, there is nothing anyone could do.That shop would be open most days, we are talking about a once a month market to bring people into silsden to use our shops. The shops in silsden have been asked and will continue to be whether or not they would like a stall. If they chose for whatever reason not to take one that is up to them, They would not have been consulted over a duplicate shop opening up. you can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, we can't please everyone BUT we have tried, and for that I feel the market deserves your support. An overwhelming majority have voted for it... the market will go ahead. |
![]() |
Herself |
Like you say Allie, if someone wanted to open a shop there wouldn't be consultation. However they would be paying rent and rates and their prices would reflect that, making it an equal ball game. I praise the organisers, I do want to see a market, but I would like to buy things I cant normaly buy in Silsden. I am "long enough in the tooth "to remember , that was what markets used to be about, that was the joy of a market. I will be going to the market to purchase the things I can't get in Silsden.I hope it is a sucess, But I will be supporting the local shops first who have for generations been there for the cobby folk. |

It is getting easier to get most day to day items in Silsden. I am wondering who will be selling there. Maybe if it gets a specialist edge to it people will come from far and wide, for the the benefit of all? |

do we know when this is to happen |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I have thought long and hard about posting this reply but...........! Some of the comment's have been somewhat less than accurate. One particular individual appear's to have a somewhat autocratic view of "our village" and indeed how it ought to be promoted!!!!!!!! As both a shopkeeper AND a born and bred cobbydaler i can hopefully say that business's ARE open on a Saturday and would gladly open until 5 or 6 or later if local's would give us there patronage. However they do not and as such the comment made by the individual concerned is WAY out of order. One can only wonder if this person actually use's local shop's????????????????? My partner and i both FULLY support the market idea in theory however given that ultimate power would be down to Bradford Council there would be no possible intervention from "OUR" local councellors!Thereby no protection for us as shopkeepers! I would much rather have this discussion with the individual concerned and would welcome her to call in any afternoon to do so!!!!! MY NAME IS JULIAN AND I AM CO OWNER OF FODDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please visit won't you. I think you know who you are!! |
