Keighley Area Committee will tonight discuss the plans to cut the annual budget for summer bedding plants in the Keighley and Ilkley constituency from £87,500 to £17,500. The constituency currently receives almost half the council’s annual spending on flowerbeds.

Cllr Naylor said: “These proposals don’t seem to have been thought through. There are no costings.

“If you’re going to talk to voluntary groups or parish councils about taking on the job, they will want to know how much it will cost them.

I thought a lot of the flowers were sponsored by businesses I have seen signs on the roundabouts saying who has sponsored them. The cost does seem excessive, I bet it could be done a lot cheaper, councils always seem to pay over the odds for services

Cllr Mallinson is our only local councillor who is a permanent memeber of The Keighley Area Committee and I am sure he will be doing his best for Silsden.

During this last week the council has closed a lane a day on the bypass, i counted 4 wagons and 11 men cutting the verges and the central reservation and 2 road sweepers brushing up.

Multiply this by all Bradmets verges to cut and it has to be a sizeable amount, + a lot of traffic hold ups.

If Bradmet adopted the London Olympic way of filling all the grass verges and lead in roads to the village with wild flowers think of the beauty and the savings on manpower and carbon footprints.

With the savings they could either provide the parishes with flowers or give us wild meadow mixes on the flower beds.

Back to Cornwall in a few weeks. The A30 into Penzance is dual carrigeway. For grasscutting as you approach a roundabout you will see a sign saying "Warning Grass Cutting in Progress" the a sign saying which lane is closed. You then see a large wagon with a big arrow diverting you from whichever lane is closed. Then you see a guy with a strimmer. then a tractor with a side mounted grass cutter and next is one or two blokes picking litter. In front the road is clear. No hassle, fuss or tailbacks, all done in a jiffy.

Meanwhile Bradford Council take forever and the bypass but do not have the money to repair roads and footpaths. Up Howden Road grass verges are appearing as grass grows through the tarmac.

Is that the flower bed with the nail or the band stand area or both?
Will they keep planting as they do now or are they just planting with perennials and leaving to grow? ( that's what I have heard they are doing in some places)

Is this the same "to do list" as The Wesle Place Building maintenance, the original library maintenance, Town Hall maintenance, gritting, street sweeping, vegetation clearance, highways repairs, street lighting, toilet maintenance, asset management...?

Gamekeeper has no one told you yet since 2009 the Government has reduced the money given to councils by 37%, so either we have to pay more or you get reduced services.

Yes Victor, I have heard that jest. Did you not know that Silsden has, like most other towns in the Bradford area, grown out of proportion, which absorbs the effect of these cuts. Bradford Met are pleading poverty, yet they can spend is it £4,000,000 on refurbishing their own offices, which i will point out, are not that old and not in any major need of refurbishment. I will also point out, that they are sitting on land, and have been doing so for decades, then selling them off for housing.

Where is the school that should have been built decades ago? MMM, we now don't know, because the land has been sold off! Where are all the allotments that should be available? Mostly sold off. Yes that's right, for housing? Where has all this funding gone? It CERTAINLY hasn't been spent in Silsden!

I DO appreciate that councils up and down the country are finding it difficult, but i feel that, as a taxpayer, who has worked pretty much solidly for nearly 30 years, we are being robbed blind, then slapped down for standing up for ourselves. God only knows what some of the more able minded war veterans must be thinking. Bradford Met, on the whole, is a total disgrace!

I see the flower beds have been planted, and they look lovely. However, the future planting and maintenance of the beds is very doubtful!

This should not be a problem if local people want the gardens planted out. There is quite a lot in the STC kitty, and this is one way our money could be spent.. if people want it!

We have just returned home from Norfolk and reading that we may not be funded for the flower bed. Just a thought, on visiting Hunstanton where they have the most beautifully laid out gardens we spoke to one of the men weeding and congratulated him on the wonderful display, we are all volunteers that look after them. WOW, what a brilliant idea, the council provide the plants and the people plant and look after their designated beds, just a thought that perhaps this could be the way to go.

On another note, not one pile of dog poo to be seen anywhere, somebody has got that one sorted.

This is already in hand, as part of the month of events in July - Silsden's Grand deParty

Expect to see the hanging baskets appear towards the end of June. This year the Tour de France is starting in France so the theme will be red white and blue. Businesses will also be decorating their windows with a decorated Eiffel Tower(s).

For more information for the events which will take place in July see
granddeparty.org.uk

PS If you would like to sponsor any events, or help in any way, please get in touch.
