I wonder if there is anyone else in Silsden who has recently had a gas meter changed by this firm?

I have and they gave me mega grief. I'd be interested if anyone else has had problems?

Condemning the flue of my boiler, which is as the house was built 30 years ago, and inspected on a maintenance contract by British Gas for 22 years! Including less than a month ago!

When I reported to British Gas they sent their own fitter out to inspect and were bemused what the problem was, and said there wasn't one! I couldn't report what he said about the United Utilities fitter as I'd probably get sued.

Wasted me lots of time on phone, caused gas to be turned off for 10 hours, hence no heat on one of the coldest days of the year!!

I was not a happy bunny and wish I had seen the UU fitter not my daughter!!

When an operative turns a gas supply back on he has a duty to relight all appliances and carry out basic checks. If he has any doubts he must disconnect the gas until further checks are carried out.He may not have been qualified to do a through check himself and the first rule is if in doubt cover yourself.
Its a tough call but something could have happened to the flue since it was serviced. And it could have been serious if fumes had leaked.

Point is 'gazzer' he was Corgi qualified only to change gas meters. As I have no doubt you know it is a monkeys job! I appreciate he has a duty but he WAS SIMPLY WRONG! IT WAS SEALED PERFECTLY! If he had bent has back to look properly he would have seen!

It was patently obvious the flue had not changed since the house was built, and we had proof it has been inspected twice in the last couple of months! An experienced fitter would have known there was no issue.

When British Gas came to check they laughed at him, can't say what else they said on here!

The real reason is that our boiler is a rascal to light and on the rate he is on for changing meters he couldn't be bothered! I know UU of old sad :(

Anyway I did not post on here to debate the rights and wrongs of someone not able to do their job, I want to know if anyone else in Silsden has had the same issue. My advice to them would be to make sure they inspect the system first and give them an assurance that they will turn the system back on.

we had had our meter changed this afternoon, all that went fine, but, they have left us with no hot water or central heating and apparently it's not their job to sort that out. Just wasted an hour and a half on the phone to UU and British Gas, still no nearer, and they tell us its £160 to fix. Just to warn anybody who is due to have this done, what should have been a free meter change has left us without any hot water and central heating. Thank godness it's a little warmer tonight. angryangryangryangryangry

After my dealings with UU I would advise anybody to get the meter fitter to agree IN WRITING before he starts work that everything will be left working after he fits the meter!

They WRONGLY refused to switch on my boiler and condemned the installation! MUPPETS!!!

Fortunately British Gas dealt very well with the matter and sorted things out at no cost!

Alan, How did you get british gas to sort it out at no cost? After an hour or two of going in circles with UU and BG the best BG could do was make us sign up for their 12 month / £28 per month service plan.

I hope you didn't sign up to the BG service plan - that's £336 to light your gas boiler, a problem which didn't exist until your meter was changed!

We certainly didn't sign up. we could have a new boiler every 3 yrs at that price. Got a trusted/reliable/qualified/local(ish)engineer out today so should have heating back very soon, and he said he'll give it a service at the same time. I'll let you know the final bill to compare prices with BG

Got service plan, so they just had to inspect flue to confirm that UU were talking rubbish!

The problem was the ignition button wasn't fully pulled out as it should have been after it was re lit. So it is a direct result of the UU chap not doing his job properly that we have had to have an engineer come out and fix it. Needless to say we will be looking to UU to get the cost back. He was done and dusted with the problem within 30 seconds so gave to boiler a service too. All in all £50. Much better than the BG service plan

I must stress this is only rumour and speculation. I have heard anecdotal rumours that there have been a few(around 3) cases of people finding meter unions leaking this week.I dont know if they are these replacement meters or just a coincidence.Might be worth a sniff around your meter. You could put a small amount of washing up liquid in a cup and fill it with water then splash it on the meter unions. If it bubbles its leaking. You must then wash the liquid off the unions/meters.

If you suspect you may have a gas leak then telephone 0800 111 999 and a free engineer will come out.
