I was thinking the same thing when I first heard of the plans. Not only that, but the area of the new building to be occupied by management over treatment and consultation areas. Strikes me that they are employing people to supervise people to supervise people. They are not there in a medical relationship.

A couple of things I would like to point out, having worked in General Pratice previously...

Do you actually realise how many support staff are required when you have a number of Gp's and Practice Nurses? I used to work for a GP who worked as signle practioner with one nurse, with 4 support staff and we could only just keep up with the demands placed on us in terms of actual patient care and the health care targets related to reviewing chronic conditions and medication reviews, refferals etc etc etc. Beleive me if you were a GP or practice manager budgets are tight so you would not employ staff unless they were absolutely needed.

As far as the building is concerned I imagine it doesn't really suit the needs of modern healthcare. Appart from aything else the space anbd layout are not ideal and it always seems a little but shabby, dark and unwelcoming.

Do you actually realise how many support staff are required when you have a number of Gp's and Practice Nurses? I used to work for a GP who worked as single practioner with one nurse, with 4 support staff and we could only just keep up with the demands placed on us in terms of actual patient care and the health care targets related to reviewing chronic conditions and medication reviews, refferrals etc etc etc. Believe me if you were a GP or practice manager budgets are tight so you would not employ staff unless they were absolutely needed.

Not having worked in a surgery environment, I have never experienced that side of it. I have got to give the surgery their due, they certainly uphold a professional front. They certainly hide this side of it well.

As an outsider, the concept of having more admin staff than gp's, nurses, nursing assistants, trainees, appears to be beurocratic.

The current building, when compared to Steeton, is dark and dingy. It wasn't all that fantastic when it was first built!! After visiting the centre for post natal visits, drop in sessions etc, the surgery could definitely have been managed more appropriately.

Having said that, with the cuts that are being made nationally to the NHS, how can the cost of this development be justified? Why not review the current staffing levels, utilise the resources at hand effectively?

We should be happy and proud that Silsden will have a new health centre. Stop complaining, for heaven's sake.
Our health is the most important thing to us, and if money is being spent on it here in Silsden.....great!

Having worked on maintainence at Silsden Health Centre it was ready for a facelift and with different needs now required I would support a new building as being the most cost effective way of improving things.. Personally my doctor is based at the fantastic facilities in Addingham. Why shouldnt Silsden have the same.
A proposed new health facility in Keighley has just been shelved so we came close to missing out..

In two minds about this for first hand reasons....my first concern is that from a contractors point of view going back about 6 years, is that the project was abandoned due to serious lack of funds...so as many of you have the same concerns in terms of costs to the NHS and increase cost to us..where HAS the money suddenly appeared from, as this is going to be a very costly project? ...On the other foot...I as a visitor of the health centre, why shouldnt we have something better and more modern? I only truly hope its for the better and gets us in to see the doctors A LOT QUICKER! I hope its coming out of the doctors budget though...or is this tooooo much to ask shocked 8O

Despite what the media would have us believe, the country is not bust....lots of projects are going ahead, money is being spent in all sorts of areas.
Life goes on, and it's great to see Silsden getting some of the money available.
It looks like our schools will expand as well.
Going back to our local Health Centre, the doctors and nurses there have been on my case recently, and I can't speak highly enough about the prompt and expert care I've had from them over the last few months happy :)

That would be nice for a change as in my experience the admin staff leave a lot to be desired.

Posted on behalf of Richard

Parking has been an issue with the health centre for a long time. The staff at the Health centre have requested people park appropriately, preferably leaving their cars at home and walk to the centre. The silver Seat has parked on the lowered kerb, making it both difficult and dangerous for people with pushchairs, wheelchairs etc to cross the road.

It is equally dangerous to pull out of either the childrens' centre or the surgery, with the current parking situation, as it is effectively turned into a single track road.

Anyone know if the development is running to plan? They certainly appear to be takin their time getting the old building down.

The staff in the cabins are doing a great job, despite the weather and circumstances..

www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/14275878.Best_and_worst_GP_surgeries_in_Bradford_revealed___how_does_your_rate_/

Silsden Health Centre rated 82% in customer satisfaction. Still room for improvement, but not a bad score, when you look at the rest.
