I have always been a supporter of the Co-op, but for the second time I have had to have a real good moan to a supervisor about the bags they now expect us to put shopping in!

On the checkout she refused to supply anything other than the smaller 'environmental' bags that rip as soon as you put anything in. But wanted to charge me 10p each for a dozy big bag!

Yet there were the standard bags on the next checkout! Do they really want customers anymore?

Not to worry probably another customer lost, ASDA in Keighley looks good to me now!!!!

Shame on you Alan. Why didn't you take a shopping bag with you in the first place? Shops never used to provide free (plastic) bags, the most you would get is a paper bag to put your loose veggies in.

'cos we recycle them as dog poo bags!

The new smaller ones rip easily, and that ain't good for dog poo wink ;)

When I was a kid they used to do paper carrier bags, why don't they now?

Poops a lot wink ;)

Besides when you buy £50 to £100 shopping you don't expect to put it in bags that won't hold owt!

More environmental rubbish!

Non biodegradeable plastic bags that contain dog poo which ends up in landfill, or stuffed in walls, is definitely enviromental rubbish. sad :(

Go and buy a 10p reusable shopping bag for your shopping and some biodegradeable bags for your dog.

If you buy a 10p big bag the Co-op replace it for free when it is ripped.

Admitted they are no good to scoop poop or as bin liners as I use the little 'uns for.

Glad you mentioned that I use 'em as bin liners too wink ;)

Would be happy to use the 'environmental' bags IF they were the same size as the normal ones and stronger. But why are they smaller? Answer - 'cos the are weak and easily tear so they have to make 'em smaller!

Sorry, Alan but you appear to have added the word 'bags' to your post. On a serious note, veggies sausages are down to half price again, or as some put it, the same as they are every week in Iceland. ( The shop....before you start tetleydrinker!!)

Alan why not do as me and the misses does, we shop on line, let Tesco's deliver it.
It works out cheaper than driving a great big gas guzzeler all the way to the shops.
100 nappy sacks only costs a few bob and are better than the co-op bags anyway.

Blame the gutless politicians. They have not had the guts to make all shops charge a minimum of 10/20p for every bag they give to customers.

Works in Ireland and a lot of other places.

The country is really run by the Murdoch press and the Daily Mail. Both Brown and Cameron are sh>>> scared of them. Just see how the media monopoly rules are bent in favour of News International.

Do not blame me. I take my own bag and read the Guardian.

Going to ASDA today. £50 plus quid outta the Co-ops pocket for the sake of bags to put the shopping in.

By the way I dug out one of their old white larger bags that I would be more than happy to use. Guess what it's biodegradeable.

If I were a cynical person I'd presume that the puny corn starch ones were significantly cheaper to produce or summat.

Alan, I'm not sure if you are talking about the small white bags or the soft bags with green writing.

I would agree the small white bags are useless.

But the soft bags (with green text) are great. They may look puny but are really strong and we recycle them by putting all our potato peelings and vegetable waste in them. You can just throw it all in the compost bin (you have got a compost bin haven't you? happy :)) This type of bag cost a fortune to buy so good on the Coop for providing them free. happy :)happy :)

Normal sized white bags with black writing, and says biodegradeable are the ones we like.

Those with green writing are rubbish, tear and hold hardly anything.

ASDA was good this morning, but too big for me. So back to Sainsbury's wink ;)

I hope the Co-Operative follows Lidle and Aldi and no longer dispenses 'free' bags.

Went to ASDA today. Clean, boring and watch the prices. I noticed a few items that are actually cheaper in the Co-Operative !!
Also a lot of buy 3s and 2s, alright if you need them -- otherwise.

Less choice than Skipton Morrison's, uninteresting stock compared with Sainsbury's. Not everything is cheaper.

Will not be rushing back.

the co-op's problem is lack of ordering expertise, and fulfilment of customer expectations. A new manager sounds like a good idea. They should not have empty shelves, with basics not there.... and loads of trolleys standing about waiting for people to unload them. They have a captive audience, but fail to deliver on many occasions. I arrived at a till(the only one working) to find a load of food there, and no customer! It was a member of staff who had gone off to find something to add to her shopping, she came back a few minutes later, no apologies for keeping us waiting, just couldn't care less! Time for a change.

Does the local store actually have much control over what is ordered? Often ordering and re-stocking can be automatic from a centralised system.

In practise a shop manager would not be expected to know the stock usage levels for every item in the store. This is down to the area 'charge hands' but with the shopping hours we expect such stafficing levels are no longer possible.

Interesting that personal service to one customer is an inconvenience to another. Of course the Co-Operative could double the staff to provide the super service some people crave. But then those who now whinge about the service would certainly whinge about paying for it.

Low price expectations mean that srvice levels fall. It is impossible to have it all ways.

One of the problems in this country is that we want Scandavavian levels of service at US tax rates. Unfgortunately there is no such thing as a free lunch.

If you want top dollar service then shop at Booths or Waitrose. You pay for it of course, but ultimately one gets what one pays for. At least in this part of the world you do have the choice. In some parts of the country I believe it is a choice of Tescos, Tescos or Tescos!!

no one could say that co-op prices are cheap! We are paying, so we do have a say about the service we get. It is a management problem, and if everyone accepts poor standards, nothing will ever change. If it is a central ordering problem then it does not work properly and needs fixing.

i find it hard to believe what was said earlier about asdas prices being more expensive than co op
unless you were talking say kettle crisps 2 for £2 on offer at co op for instance and normal price at asda

out of all the supermarkets on average i find asdas cheapest

and ive tried them all

Big Up Asda!!!

If there was one on industrial estate I would walk down there for my items, as it is I'll have to make do with Keighley!

Silsden Co-op is one of the worst I have ever been in. Most of the staff are miserable (except for a few) and very unhelpful and most of the time they do not have whatever you have gone in for.

Unlike a lot of people you have a choice unlike some:

www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jul/16/watchdog-defends-supermarket-competition-test

Only problem I have at the Co-Operative is waiting while people fill up those plastic bags. Takes twice as long as using the bag I bring with me.

As for prices. CoOp milk 2 pints 86p, ASDA 2 pints 86p, Poundland 4 pints £1 !!!

Ah well, looks like if I wanna shop at the Co-op I've gotta buy myself a cardigan and pair of cord trousers from Greenwoods, a nice vinyl shopping bag off Keighley Market and look like Roy Cropper off Coronation Street.

Bugger that for a life!
