IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Vacant premises - your thoughts |
|

With the closure of Bai Tong, Grouse, Barclays, The Flower Company and finally Projecto (or Daisy Chains as I think the owners were in the process of renaming it to), there are so many vacant premises in our lovely Silsden. I've heard a rumour that The Flower Company is going to become yet another hairdressers while Bai Tong is going to be.... you guessed it, another Indian Restaurant / takeaway! Do we really need more duplicate businesses in Silsden?? Silsden is meant to be a little village with local amenities (according to estate agents) but so far, we're a replicated village with a co-op and 2 newsagents, 3 butchers along with vast over-populated takeaways and hairdressers, lol! So in your opinion, what types of shops would you like to see opening in Silsden?? What do you think we're lacking? |

Silsden is not "meant" to be anything - as far as it's high street shops go, that will be dictated by demand - with costs so high and bigger suppliers so near and the ease of internet shopping, nothing will survive other than what is doing well here already (Butchers, hairdressers and takeaways). Twee little tearooms, gift shops, furniture shops, niche food shops (fruit and veg, fishmongers and delis) and other things do not survive and will never survive in Silsden. I am afraid it is a case of like it or lump it. I can not think of a single shop that would do well in Silsden that is not already there |

there is supposed to be a group looking into shopping habits, I keep raising this issue on here, ages ago they did a survey about shopping in silsden and said they would publish the results,I actually e-mailed them to find out what was happening and I never got a reply, I cannot remember the name now but someone called crewsdon? maybe it.Many years ago there were some lovely shops in silsden and they were fairly well used, peoples ideas change, maybe a generation thing, all people in silsden seem to want is hairdressers, takeaways, nail salons etc not sure what that says about the people who live here !more money than sense maybe |

It's quite obvious to me - if people want the whole "walk around, high quality shopping experience" they go to Ilkley, Skipton or Harrogate - if they want groceries, they go where it is cheapest, hair and nails can be done to a high standard locally at no mark up, so why not go locally. The butchers will survive as they provide a service that supermarkets have yet to improve on, even if it is slightly more expensive. If you want to get rid of the takeaways, close a couple of the pubs, that should see a few of them going to the wall. It is not a case of what people want in Silsden - it is a case of what they are prepared to use often enough to make it economical - look at fruit and veg - every one says we need it - yet in the last 3 years there have been 2 attempts and both have given up. It is just easier to buy your veg when you get everything else in Asda. |

Copied from my reply under Barclays. At one time everyone shopped at the village shops, rich and poor. But the poor realised they were being screwed so started the Co-Operative movement. The 'poor' used the Co-Operative while the better off patronised the local shops. The increase is personal mobility meant that the better off could move around and choose their shops. The poor meanwhile stuck with the Co-Operative. I shop at the Co-Operative. I am also mobile and shop at theose other local shops from Yorkshire and Lancashire (Asda, Morrisons, Booths, Marks and Spencer) and sometimes those from down South (Tescos, Sainsburys, Waitrose) and occasionally the foreign Johnnies: Aldi, Lidl, Netto etc. Not many places in this country where one has such a choice. Within reason all can be reached by bus and train from Silsden. I also support local shops when they have what I want. Mainly newspapers, bread, meat and the PO. Specialist shops will always struggle if they do not target a local market, and/or have a net shop back up. |

I read with interest the comments on vacant properties in Silsden and what may or may not do well. I am nearing completion on a shop on Aire View. Though the for sale board has not been amended as 'under offer'. I will be selling something very different. Very lovely Crystals and gem stones and hand made soap, essential oils and incense and other ethnic gifts. I agree that a small specialist business will not survive on local trade alone but I hope the locals will like the wares available and the atmosphere of the shop. I will have a web site and I get out and about to craft fairs all year round to supplement the shop sales. I will post again when I have completed on sale with more info. best regards Ally (Crystal Space). |

Ally...good luck with your new business, you seem to be covering all the angles, as you need to do these days. On a general point about Silsden, why should it not be a place where tourists visit, and spend their money? If there was proper parking, local facilities, good shops, interesting things to see, why should Silsden remain rooted in the past, as some people would like? Silsden has a lot going for it, and many improvements have been made, but could it be a tourist attraction, or would some of the locals frighten them away? Any ideas out there? |

The Aire Valley magazine is a good promotional tool for Silsden. I would like to see more promotion of Silsden based ventures. On a trip to Buckden a few weeks ago, called on at the shop to buy a packet of sweets, where was it made? Silsden! Cobbydale Confectionery. A company I didn't know existed. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) This website doesn't do bad for promoting Silsden I will let the stats for the last 14 days speak for themselves (remember I can only count local pages, not the external pages accessed such as bbc etc) |

Lets have a marina!!! That would bring lots of boaters to Silsden and visitors. Perferably in field down Sykes Lane (we wish) |

the marina idea has been brought up many times, yes a great idea and plenty of poss sites by the canal just needs someone to fund it |

I've just been round the former Riverdale Publishing unit, for information for one of my assignments. The place is in a real mess. I can't remember just when the place was built, but it had been gutted inside. If the unit is left much longer it will be s demolition job. |
