Sorry, I know this isn't local news but I just thought that those with children would like to know that the second reading of the National Service Bill 2013 - 2014 will take place on the 28th February 2014. |

Kettering’s Conservative MP Philip Hollobone, who sponsored the bill, is convinced that some form of service for youngsters, be it charitable work, care for the elderly, work linked to the NHS or participation in the armed forces, would help instil a greater sense of ‘self-respect, personal reliance, discipline and behaviour’ into society. www.independent.co.uk/student/news/irrational-service-compulsory-national-service-bill-to-hit-parliament-in-2014-8805449.html Would this be such a bad thing? |

there are pros and cons but i doubt it will get anywhere soon. most pundits seem to be saying it will be filibustered out of time. |

I do hope this comes to nothing, it is another cynical way of the Torys getting people to work for nothing, when they wont even pay a decent amount of tax on the vast pay they get. |

i think its a great idea but not for every child! its great solution for young people who commit minor offences, instead of custodial sentences and ruining their job prospects, get them doing national service and making something better of themselves as well as putting something back into he community |

I should have posted this bit from The Independent article as well: The scope of the scheme would include ‘instruction in personal financial budgeting, household bills, nutrition, cooking, time-keeping, life skills, tolerance towards others, treating elderly and disabled people with dignity and respect’ and teaching in basic aspects of the law relating to the most common offences involving young people. Those with severe mental or physical disabilities would be exempt from the one year full-time scheme, to be undertaken before the age of 26 in order to avoid committing an offence. This doesn't sound like a cannon fodder idea to me, but it will never happen because it's a private members bill |

I agree with you grandad it is just another Tory trick, similar to the scheme they ran during Maggie's administration, where employers were paid to take on young staff, only to let them go as soon as the money stopped and take another. As Frankie says not for every child, take out the rich, they will stay at uni doing a masters and PhD, this will take them past 26 or as they did pre 1960 be sent to work abroad. Then ( particularly if the scheme changes to military service, which it will bearing in mind the cuts to the army) there will be the gender difference, followed by religious and cultural. There will be so many exclusions that it will come down to the kid on the jasmin Allen estate. I am not against some voluntary work, I clocked up 40 years service with friends of Airedale, but as the saying goes " one volunteer is better than ten pressed men" |

Any wishing to see this taken to its logical conclusion, NO VOTE WITHOUT SERVICE! should read Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. It is alluded to in the film but not really explained. It was one of the issues raised in the book that attracted criticism when first published. While it obviously fits in with the Blame (aka Tories)party's weird philosophy it would actually cost; which is where it really ends. Note: the current conservative parties seems to have a policy of blaming all problems on the previous government - naturally, but also the poor, sick, unemployed etc. who are all classed as feckless scroungers. They have also allude to scrounging pensioners but tend not to shout that bit out to much. The bankers, who actually caused all the current problems, are never mentioned. Wonder why?????????? |

quoteWhat a load of rubbish...the useless bank regulation set up by Labour caused most of the crisis. And hundreds of thousands of bankers have lost their jobs since, more announced this week again. Get your facts right old miner. Typical Labour left wing trash information again. Be honest...! |

Off topic.... maybe off topic, but I didn't start it...have a look at this www.theguardian.com/business/2013/may/28/big-four-banks-cut-jobs and there have been many more jobs lost since this article |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) 1 The banking crisis was caused by www.stockexchangesecrets.com/2008-financial-crisis.html 2 National Service: Having read the link, I now know that the NS Bill does not mean only compulsory armed forces service. Young people should not be forced into doing anything against their wishes. The great unheard of majority of young people are pleasant and want to get a career and should not be coerced into following work unrelated to their goal as this is an oppressive measure. |

I'm afraid a yoppo service is already in place and in action. Apprentice schemes run where an employer gets a grant to take on an Apprentice at minimum wage (less that £3 an hour is they are under 18) for the duration of a day a week course which does get them a qualification at the end - but doesn't have to lead to a job. Other schemes allow employers to take on job seekers on a trial basis where they pay them no money, they just get their benefits and again no promise of a job - thats why the jobless total has dropped - its not that people are in work! |

and just another point, we as a nation do have the best armed forces in the world. They are not a conscripted service but wish to be in the service. There are however many of our european partners how still have a six month conscript period which must be performed either before or after further education. Most young people look at this as an additional opportunity to prepare for a career. There are pluses and minuses to both side of the argument. |
