Posted on behalf of Pat
I am very concerned about the state of litter generally but as I live in Silsden, particularly in Silsden itself. I went out this morning on a walk around Silsden and took a bin bag with me. I picked up and bagged litter in a smalll area on Belton Way leading up to the canalside new houses. The majority of items I picked up were empty cigarette packets, plastic wrappers and dog poo bags. I feel very strongly that dog owners in this area are not very responsible about their pets' poo. The bags that they leave lying around and then also dog poo on the pavement. This issue needs to be addressed urgently I feel. Two women walked past me this morning and stopped to say that they often wondered about doing picking up litter as I was and were very concerned about litter too. They advised me to go onto Sisden.net and to post this message.
More signs need to be put up encouraging people to pick up litter and not to drop it in the first place. If the lanes, streets and park are cleaner, more litter-free then people may be less likely to drop litter in the first place.
I would welcome your views on this important issue. |

In absolute agreement. The subject of dog poo seems a frequent one on Silsden.net. There are plenty of signs around about fines for not picking up dog poo but has anyone actually seen a dog warden in Silsden? Does Bradford council ever send one here to patrol? |

A question - is there a litter bin in that area? |

On Belton Road there is a dog bin, provided by the Building Society there. Many's the time I pass to see a poo bag thrown down at the base of it, thoughtless, couldn't care less or what!!!! Belton Road is disgusting, I walk along there regularly and it's an absolute disgrace. I am usually out for 3 walks a day, differing my route each time. The length and breadth of Silsden leaves a lot to be desired, dog poo from end to end. We have had this posting so many times, and yet there is still this awful problem. Saying to my other half yesterday, that I would rub the owners noses in it, then shoot the dog and then the owner. That's how strongly I feel about this problem. By the way, we have 2 dogs ourselves, deep pockets for bags, treats, and paper towel. Often feel embarresed by all this mess, I worry that folk might think it's me that hasn't picked up and binned. I still haven't seen anyone not picking up, it's catching the blighters, then no doubt you'd get your ears chewed off if you did say something. RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP, WHAT A LAUGH. |

Golden Oldie...we've been here so many times, but nothing happens. Most dog owners clean up, but there are some who don't care a ***t. Nothing will ever happen, the authorities in this area don't see it as their responsibility...if you Google it, many councils are taking action in a hardball way, using PCSO's, hit squads, heavy fines etc. Our streets are a disgrace, but nothing will be done, get used to it. Silsden has done many great things over the last few years, with money spent on many improvements, and in many ways it is a great little town to be proud of, but getting action on dog poo...nobody in authority seems to want to play hardball with the few who mess up our streets. I just can't understand it. Near our schools is bad, you have to warn children to be careful where they walk, all the time. Time for the gloves to come off, and some big fines to be handed out...I wish! |

To the person who left the empty pizza box on the grass by the bandstand you do not have to go back today to put it in the bin today as I picked it up and walked almost 10` to put it in the empty bin for you. |

Half a dozen arrests - $1000 fines - plenty of publicity - I bet it wold make TV News. Suddenly no litter.... But just to be fair on the 6 unfortunates I would allow some quiet appeals after a few weeks - after all they would only be used as examples to get the bigger issue solved. |

Maybe we need to all get together and have a regular clean up. There were a number of us who cleared up around the beck before Christmas but it is clearly not just the beck which is letting Silsden down.
I do own a dog and there is no excuse for not picking up, don't own a dog if you are too squeamish to pick up the poo and carry it until you come across a bin.
There are plenty of bins about people just choose not to use them whether it be for dog poo or general litter. I am constantly picking up litter outside my house as I have no garden wall so I cant stop it ending up on my property I do not want people to thinking I am scruffy. |

Raver The Maximum fine for not picking up dog poo is £1,000, but when they pick it up then discard the bag it is littering and the max fine is £2,000! But nobody will ever get that, unless our cash strapped council realise this is a great way of making money, fine them the max plus costs every time they are caught also name and shame them in the papers. |

Good for you d'c. Admire your community spirit. Such a shame in this day and age that we have so much technology to hand, and yet there are still those amongst us that think they are immune from rules and regs. Not only regarding the litter problem but also the general contempt towards anything that involves them thinking of anyone but themselves. How many times have you seen someone tearing paper off an item, dropping as they walk, usually either passing or within a stride of a bin?.Driving along talking in their mobiles, tearing the guts out of cars in a 30 mile limit zone, the list is endless, but all examples of todays sod you culture. There, my moan for the day!!!! |

The worst is taking your kids to school, you can,t tell them to walk straight as they have to keep looking down at the floor because of the filthy dog owners who let their dogs foul on the path. If I see it happen I think I will follow them and place it in the middle of there paths for them to trail it into there homes on there nice clean carpets... I'm sure they'd love having to clean it up then |

I have recently moved to area and pick my dog poo up. I have noticed a large number don't and find this irresponsible. I walked behind one lady with 2 greyhounds along the canal and 2x she never picked up her dog mess. There is dog mess over most of foot paths I'm constantly looking where I am walking. From now on if I see people they will be photographed and reported. Think of your children nephews and nieces and grand kids that could be blinded thro irresponsible laziness !!!! |

I have picture of her and 2 dogs at mo I can't load as using mobile phone net. If I see anyone else they to will be photographed. It's disgusting where I lived before was on an estate and not the best but believe me there was no dog mess anywhere people there looked after their dogs and cleaned up after them. At the end of the day we have to protect where we live or it will look awful. If they can't pick up the poo they shouldn't have the dog in the 1st place |

I have to say, I'm sick of having to move dog mess outside my house. I've also seen signs up and down the road telling people not to let their dog poo oustise their house! I agree with the walking to school thing too. You just shouldn't have to worry about that! |

Re the signs folk put up about dog fouling:- Ther is one halfway up Mitchell Lane, which okay, may be to the point, but is offensive itself! My father mentioned it again today as it troubles him that young children can read it too! We feel this sign has been up too long and needs removing as it is offensive. Perhaps the Dog Warden Service could put up signs in the area which 'hopefully' would be effective without offending the passers by whom do not own dogs! |

Having only recently moved to Silsden I am absolutely amazed at how brazen some of the people are who openly let their dogs poo in the park. There is one bloke who has a black labrador with a blue collar and every morning without fail his dog leaves a huge mound of poo on the park. There are many others including a group of women who regularly let their dogs foul on the tennis courts and on the bowling green.
My friend's daughter contracted toxicariasis a few years ago, i would not wish this on anyone.
I am photographing the people who regularly offend, they are in a public place so I am allowed to do so, and am sending the images to Bradford council. |

A friend of mine who lives in a village near York, had her son fall over and her poor son ended up landing head first in a pile of poo. She tried an interesting tactic on her route to school... she took a stick or two of chalk in her pocket and wrote next the piles and said she mainly repeatedly wrote "pick up your dog poo" Also "have respect" "dog poo can kill" "children walk here, don't make our kids blind" "have respect" apparently it did shame people and for about six weeks there was no fouling outside the school, but then it started again so she going to carry her chalks again. It may be worth considering it is a pro-active tactic. I have a box of lovely coloured chalks if anyone wants any |

A lot of people are always going on about law and order and how we ought to re-introduce flogging.
Maybe the effectiveness of flogging could be tested on dog poo violators to see if it really works. |
