Posted of behalf of Sybil Jones, Australia I am writing a book about my ancestors James and Margaret Cowling born around 1776 and their son Joshua Cowling. I have record of their 8 children, all baptised at St. James Parish Church, Silsden and I would love to have a copy of that beautiful church. I live in Australia and am writing my history for my children, grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Sybil Jones |

Cowling (with several different spellings) is one of the oldest names connected with Silsden and appears on many ancient records. William Cowling (born 1897) who was a noted local historian in his day, claimed to have traced his ancestry in Silsden through many hundreds of years, and left behind some interesting research.The name apparently originated from the occupation of cowherd. Is this any interest to Sybil? There is also a history booklet about St James' Church(produced in the 1960s by William Cowling) which could be copied for her, if any use. |
