Keighley MP Kris Hopkins begins petition as campaign for new Steeton and Silsden pedestrian bridge gathers pace

From the Keighley News
5:34am Thursday 15th October 2015

By Miran Rahman

A PETITION to help connect two Aire Valley communities divided by the Aire Valley Trunk Road has been launched by Keighley's MP.

It aims to help step up the campaign for a new pedestrian bridge over the dual carriageway to make it safer for pedestrians to walk between Steeton and Silsden.

People on foot currently have to negotiate fast-moving traffic on the A629 to get between the town and the village, or to reach Silsden from Steeton & Silsden Railway Station.

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins launched the petition calling for a footbridge at the end of last week.

He explained the has has been campaigning on this issue for more than a year and, before the General Election, gave Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin a guided tour of the area to make the case for the project.

He has now invited Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones, the minister with responsibility for roads and highways, to make a similar visit.

Mr Hopkins said: “Since the General Election, I have continued my dialogue with transport ministers and I am confident Andrew Jones will come to the area very soon to see the need for the bridge and hear the views of local people.

“In the meantime, I will be asking residents and business people to sign my petition, so Andrew and his officials can be left in no doubt about the strength of local feeling on this matter.”

Mr Hopkins is writing to residents requesting their views and outlining his arguments in favour of the bridge.

He visited high street businesses in Silsden on Friday to hand out the petition and ask for their support.

He added: “There is a very clear need for a bridge to be built across the A629, adjacent to Steeton and Silsden Railway Station.

"It is an incredibly busy road, and I have long feared the lives of pedestrians are at risk if something isn’t done.

“There is a strong desire among Steeton and Silsden residents and businesses for the two communities to be properly linked.”

Commenting after Patrick McLoughlin's visit to this location last November, Craven Ward councillor, Andrew Mallinson, said there had been a good case for many years for a footbridge.

He said when he last investigated the cost of such a project, the quoted total came to nearly £1.5 million, adding there were also land ownership issues, which would need to be resolved first.

Might be wrong, but I seem to remember Mr Hopkins visiting the station with the then, transport minister
, a few years ago. He practically guaranteed a bridge was going to be built.

Gasser is right, there should be a reliable bus service that operates in line with the trains. Equally, there should be safe, Pedestrian access to and from the station.

How many people would a foot bridge benefit?

How many people have a problem crossing the road?

The main requirement for crossing the road is patience.

If you are travelling to or from Leeds there is a "reliable" bus service. The 28/58 minutes past from park green even if late, which it usually is. Allows nice time to walk from the bus stop and get your ticket. The 20/50 past from keighley meets, with a short walk meets the incoming Leeds train. Provided the train is on time. Unfortunately the size of vehicle currently in use cannot use the turning circle. If you are travelling to from Bradford ?????

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

On Friday I collected someone from the station at just before 3 pm, coming from Leeds. The bus came down to the station, went round the circle, did not stop, and the train arrived just under 2 minutes later..! What a shambles.... saw it with my own eyes, there is NO coordination. If that bus arrived 2 minutes later, or was prepared to wait 2 minutes, a lot of people would have the option to use it. Gazzer is right.

There is possibly a reason for buses not waiting.

While the bus may be timetabled for the same time as the train, if the train is late the bus cannot wait. If they wait they become late 'without avoidable cause' so the bus departs as per its timetable. If caught the company can be penalised. This is why buses sometimes wait at certain bus stops if they are running early.

In British Railway days the Skipton trains would often wait if they knew the London train into Leeds was a bit late. Privatisation finished of that bit of customer service. Leave late now and you are penalised. Stuff the customer.

While the bus could wait for the train, how long?

A bus service could be provided that only left when a certain train arrived, but would it be viable?

Connecting services are a good idea, in theory. Practically though for timetabled systems there can be many not so obvious problems.

A bridge over the bypass will not help with the main problems. I.e. The railway station is, ( by the old estimate) one mile from the church gates & there is nowhere to park after 7:15 am weekdays. The former we can do nothing about.

Old minor my father was a driver for the West Yorkshire Road Car Company from 1946 to his retirement in 1978, he always said, "There are hundreds of reasons for a bus to be late but none for it to run early."
Before profit became their main aim buses did wait for connections, now customer service is lost to the great god profit, which is a very short sighted view because more passengers would use them if they could get the level of service needed.
Peter, Sorry for going slightly off topic.

So do we need an expensive footbridge?

If the footbridge was available would it make you more or less inclined to walk or cycle to the station?

There doesn't seem to be any plans available as to how a footbridge would help to cross the road to the platform for the Leeds direction and the Skipton direction - can't see how it would work without physically crossing a road somewhere.

If the bridge cost say £1M this would buy a lot of subsidies for a Jackson bus service shuttle which actually met the trains and didn't leave just before the train got in. They could also go round the houses and pick and deliver people to their houses.

A bridge - when it rains you get wet.

Whatever the solution it has to start with an integrated transport system, the trains are usually on time, can't say that about the buses.

Peter, re your problem of crossing station road, Provided you are able to walk far enough? it is possible to cross under the road using the Skipton bound platform then through the car park back up onto the road.
Yes I do feel a foot bridge would be of help to anybody wishing to cross the AVTR.
