Throughout the year irrepective of weather this practice goes on footpaths are for pedestrians not vehicles.
People are complelled to walk in the road pushing buggies, ushering cildren etc., The little gritter had to abandon the footpaths are go around parked vehicles. I appreciate that for periods this winter it has been safer to walk in the road but this is only temporary. the number of broken flags must be numerous.
I have notice people have parked across bus stops blocking them off , parked facing the 'wrong' way, parked opposite solid lines on the highway forcing people to drive over the lines. It seems people have lost all courtesy and plain common sense.Roll on the revolution!

It's an old problem - my mum use to really struggle get a Silver Cross pram down the pavement when I were a lad - sometimes used to take several run-ups to get through.

happy :)

For those not aware of Silver Cross, there were the Rolls Royce of prams, built like tanks, with all sorts of sharp pointy out bits on the side for the hood, tonneau, folding frame etc.

Funnily enough, the problem didn't happen more than a few times in the same locations . .

There are to many cars for the roads. Most roads were built many moons ago. I grew up in Silden in late 70's early 80's. Hardly any cars then. but the one's who were on road drove like idiots due to less volume. People forget.

Meh I don't go out my way for numpties parked on the pavement EVER!!!
IF their car were to get damaged in the process then that is their own fault for obstructing a public path!
I suggest doing the same.

don't buy a house next to the main road if you have a car, simples. The most annoying people are the ones who have garages and drives but still park their cars on the pavement, why?????

ok maybe i'm wrong but i thought that pavements were for pedestrians maybe it's not illegal but if my car got damaged due to a pram or a wheelchair and it was parked on the pavement then i would feel i would only have myself to blame.

I read somewhere that any vehicle parked on a road is actually an obstruction. However I assume that this does not apply to designated parking zones, only where nothing is designated.

Parked vehicles on many roads are left alone because they are acting as a 'free' traffic calming system.

No parking areas are designated to stop the roads becoming unusable.

That is a poor excuse for not walking. Park where you are not causing an obstruction to road user or pedestrians.

Pavements are for pedestrians. angry

If you parked legally under Highways Act on the road that is more likly to stop people speeding rather half on the road and half on the footpath

The full article can be read here www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A610697 but to keep on the topic I have copied part of it here:

Pavement parkers narrow the footpath to the extent that sometimes it is necessary for pedestrians to walk in the road. Even partially blocked pavements can cause havoc especially to the blind, wheelchair bound and to parents with pushchairs. If the pavement is wide such that not much hindrance is caused, swinging the car door open into the path of passing pedestrians can add to the fun. Here timing is all-important to cause maximum nuisance.

Pavements are often not built to withstand the rigours of being driven on, especially by lorries who also like to participate in this activity. This can considerably add to the sense of achievement, as the pavements often crack and break up under the strain.

When darkness falls a new element is added. By parking against the flow and leaving dipped head lights on, the dipped beam is cast to the centre of the road, not the kerb, thereby dazzling oncoming traffic into the bargain.

Pavement parkers come from all 'walks' of life, and are not bad people. They are often misunderstood and accused of being one or more of the following:

Ignorant - They're just too stupid to realise that it is illegal and inconveniences others.

Incompetent - It's too difficult to park close and parallel to the kerb.

Lazy - The road is narrow and they can't be bothered to park in a more appropriate place and walk.

Misguided - There are yellow lines. They might be to stop parked cars causing an obstruction. By parking partly on the pavement they feel that they reduce the obstruction and thereby reduce the offence (in fact they are now committing two offences5).

Sheep - Everyone else is parked on the pavement therefore it must be the right thing to do.

Selfish - They just want to get on with their lives and disregard everyone else.

To sum up they are ignorant, incompetent, lazy, misguided, selfish sheep. They may be called much worse, but pavement parkers are unfazed by anything that may be said to them and are well versed in the allied art of giving verbal abuse.

No, nobody should try to damage a car on purpose!
But by the same principle if it is a main road it would be unsafe to walk on the road around a car so, it is at your own risk if you obstruct a footpath and someone with a landrover for a buggy tries to get past!

Can't imagine anyone would have a problem unless they liked to play traffic warden vigilante or were walking nelly the elephant, but last time I checked elphants had to use the road!
Personally I don't care so long as I can get past without having to walk out into traffic!

It might make more sense if traffic wardens were to only ticket cars not leaving a big enough gap on the pavement!
But then again there is the "damage".

I'm afraid the traffic wardens are now run by Brad Met and not the Police so common sense doesn't come into it - just revenue collection. Parking on the pavement is illegal, even if it does slow traffic. If one of the new wardens sees you parking on the pavement (and yes they do visit Silsden on a regular basis - I know one of them lives among us!) then they will give you a ticket!
