How many people have had the experience of standing at one of the zebra crossings, and had traffic stop going one way but for traffic to carry on the other way? I've heard of and seen a few people having a near miss as they walk out when one side stops and they expect the other side to.

If you read this, take care and wait for both sides to stop!

Unless the vehicle is on top of you step out. Dither on the side and too many keep going. So long as you have left enough space the vehicle will stop, they might glare, but they stop, then look the other way and stare towards traffic. Rarely fails. Just look purposeful, but on your guard just in case. Never had to use the just in case, but they certainly stop when one walks out. Most rely on not realising that they have plenty of room to stop. Always follow the cyclist drill, look at the driver, there might be a twit on the phone, but often they are actually more aware wondering if they will be spotted.

The same rule applys at any crossing LOOK BOTH WAYS befor crossing and IF IT IS SAFE TO CROSS then cross.Just because it is a ZEBRA you still have to LOOK some people DONT.Cars are supossed to STOP but it is the pedestrians responsibility to LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING.

From the online Highway code....

19

Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

That is fine in theory! But if you read it carefully it says, Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross.
Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing.
How can you do both?

For years S.T.C. have tried to get Pecan or pelican crossings like Uttley,Ilkley,Steeton and Eastburn, but BRADMET say they cannot justify the cost to change our 1930s designed Zebbra crossing dispite more traffic coming through the town and accidents and near misses on the crossings.so please lobby your ward Councillors:-Adrian Naylor tel.703 503643,Michael Kelly tel01943 831208,Andrew Mallinson tel. 01535 656171.after all this is 2010 not the 1930s lets have modern crossing and make Silsden safer...

A good site for what Alan, winding people up?
A flipping Pegasus crossing? I ask ya what is this country coming to? A crossing for bleeding horses! they have their own paths now we're encouraging them to use the public highway more by giving them their own flippin crossings. And where does the money for these crossings come from ROAD TAX paid for by car and bike users... and then there's the mess...

Oh dear I've gone off on one now Sorry Peter, I'll go get a drink and calm down before i go muck out the horses.....

Wouldn't know roosterman, the only work that I've actually seen being done whilst driving through the roadworks is pushing the button the odd time in between hat tossing and smoking a fag! Not seen anyone else happy :)

Supposed to last THREE weeks from 8th February - wonder if they'll get that right!

Walking back on Friday afternoon, I notice some pillock woman in a people carrier, chilren on board, swerve around people on the crossing to attmept to make the green light on the roadworks!

If I'd been thinking right, I'd have made a note of the number and reported it.

Number of times as a car driver, watched the guy infront / other side, set off before the pedestrians have made it all the way across - they go when they've cleared the front of their car - annoys me!

Never mind the ones I get behind on traffic light controlled crossing - they too go when the pedestrian has cleared them - and the light is still red!

Bricol
I agree with you statement that to move forward before the pedestrians have cleared the crossing is dangerous, a long time ago a schoolgirl was killed on the zebra crossing in the middle of Skipton High street; because she turned around and walked back across the crossing when just over half way across,
She didn’t notice the bus had started moving and bus driver didn’t notice she had returned.
A young life lost just to save a second or two!

Its a good job you can take booze to Lazeez. By the time you have used the zebra crossing to get there, you're ready for a stiff one. !!

I was at the zebra crossing this morning, at school time. There were some kids there and the lollipop lady was, as ever, trying to do her best. There was also a PCSO stood by the BetFred shop (with his back to it, overlooking the traffic).

Now, it was quite clear that people were waiting and traffic had stopped at the Lazeez side. Someone came flying through the zebra crossing. Do you know what the PCSO did ?

NOTHING!

Just stood there with his arms crossed. Didnt even pretend to get his notepad out. And before you ask, he didn't even turn his head so there was no way he had remembered the car reg.

No wonder people dont care if authorities dont either.

This should be passed on to the police authorities, I saw the PCSO as well, and thought he had been posted to keep an eye on this dangerous crossing...which it is ( and it has no white lines on it anymore).
I didn't see the car going through, but I'm not surprised. We've had some close shaves there, and some nasty looks from drivers!
Why was the PCSO there?
Why did he not act?

My daughter an I were almost run over on the zebra crossing yesterday at 10:15. Here's a photo taken of the zebra crossing shortly afterwards. I took the photos to the police - they can't do anything unless a police officer witnesses the offence.

If you had been knocked down and injured the police would have prosecuted the taxi driver for parking on zig-zags. So short of not being bothered what is their excuse.
Go back and ask them to investigate the incident fully including looking at cctv.

Also send a picture to the council taxi licensing department I am sure they will be more interested

not only is the taxi breaking the law, but so is the car ovetaking it, I don't just stop behind the parked car/van or whatever and get the driver to move.

Today, Sun 25 at about 4.00pm, outside the Bridge Inn:

The same taxi (and I assume driver) was abandoned, I cannot describe it as parked because it was at an angle to the kerb with the boot sticking out into the road .... just over the canal bridge and a very dangerous place to stop. angry angry

@tsengi

Try making a complaint about the lack of interest by the police.
Report it to the taxi company AND the driver to Bradford Council. That is where the private hire plate comes in!

If the police can't do anything then maybe the driver could have some "repercussions" from the private hire company and/or council!

All else fails keep posting on public forums so that people are discouraged to use their service until they can act and behave professionally!
