I've just been looking at the itinerary for the bike race in the Keighley news

www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/10946001.Itinerary_unveiled_for_Tour_de_France_s_progress_through_Keighley_district/?ref=mr

According to this

"The first vehicles in the caravan are due to start entering Silsden from 11.02am, with the cyclists expected in the town from 12.52pm."

and then

"Sponsors’ cars, decorated floats and other vehicles belonging to the caravan should begin arriving in Keighley from 11.06am and the first cyclists will enter from 12.55pm onwards."

This mean that the first vehicles in the caravan make it from Silsden to Keighley in 4 minutes and the first riders make it in 3 minutes, thats some going.

And more importantly would it be possible to have a fire engine at the end of the caravan procession so we know its over, like we do at our gala

My wife saw the Tour when it started in Ireland a few years ago. She thinks that most people don't realise how huge an event this is. It took three full car ferries to get everything and everybody there.

I was in France a few years ago when the bike race came through the village where I was holidaying. The advance caravan was made up mostly of sponsors' vehicles (who threw key rings and small gifts to the public)and riders' support cars. Then came the bike riders... woooooosh!... they were gone by so fast that one could not make out who was who among the racers. I think I will stay home and read a book (and stay out of the congestion) and perhaps catch the race on TV.

well this event (le toure) has put a cat among bmdc ive never seen as many road sweepers / drain cleaners on and around silsden and now all the walls up bolton rd are getting rebuilt, then they will be resurfacing the bad roads is`nt it funny it takes an event to free up money that was`nt supposed to be there in the first place, cant wait to see them taking off over le hump in the main street.

A few residents of Silsden seem to think the HUMP will be taken up and then replaced again after the Tour has passed through.

Only 100 days left. Think it could be a good money spinner for Silsden businesses if we organise ourselves properly

Just as long as you don't need to get in or out of the town for work. Or need an emergency service vehicle. From quite early in the morning. For a private money making exercise, it seems yo able yo disrupt a lot of things.

Wonder who'll be exposed as a drugged cheater this year?

Did anybody else hear on the local TV News yesterday, that the people behind this bike race are planning to hold a three day race EVERY YEAR starting next year?
how much disruption will that cause, and how much will it cost?

This will never happen, as Silsden will be under water from the reservoir bursting !

This year we are hosting the Grand Depart part of the race and 2 days of it will be in Yorkshire because Welcome to Yorkshire, who promote our region to tourist, put in a lot of hard work to get the race to come here. Tourist spend money and if they find out what a wonderful place we live in they will come back and spend more money in the future.

Grandad,I think you have the wrong end of the stick. The Tour de France is French and the first few days, the Grand Depart are held in a neighbouring country.

The Tour de France is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world - after the Olympics and World Cup. It will not come through Silsden (or probably Yorkshire) again in our lifetime.

Welcome to Yorkshire would like to keep the interest up for future years and promote some of the other parts of Yorkshire and the idea is there should be a cycle race on a small scale through Yorkshire in subsequent years. I doubt if it will bother us very much if at all.

I do hope that the team who are planning have
A robust plan for emergency services to gain access to any residents in need.
A plan for additional toilets if we are expecting so many extra visitors( have heard 12,000). Just hope the drainage systems cope.
Realised the increased potential for personal and property crimes..
A risk management plan related to the volume if visitors.

I hope Silsden residents are able to see the plans in place, just not the road closures.

Snowdrop, you're right to be concerned, as someone who did not feel sense of euphoria at the announcement , am probably a bad example. However I don't think the authorities will have considered the basics, the emphasis seems to be centred only on the revenue the tourists will bring in. As many businesses have now realised, the road closures will mean a drop in visitor numbers.
The only group set to make anything from the race will be the organisers, the ratepayers will be left to pick up the tab.

See the website letour2014.silsden.net for all the latest information about events and planning for Le Tour de France.

Bradford have been planning the emergency access routes and safety everyone who will be affected by the race for many months.

For venerable people carers should make arrangements for care over the LeTour weekend. On Saturday and SUNDAY if you live in Silsden it will be VERY difficult to go anywhere and Sunday forget it. Make sure care is in place for food, pills, and anything you would normally take for granted. Emergency services WILL get though if needed.

There should be more than enough toilets. The toilets by the Punch will be cleaned up by a group of volunteers (more help required before during and after the event). There will be portaloos on the Wesley Place carpark. Pubs, Town Hall and all the churches will be available.

Volunteers will be required to put up bunting and tidy Silsden, it is being organised but the Le Tour Group can't do everything without additional help. Send a message through if you can help.

Tour Makers and police will be around to keep everyone safe.

There will be limited viewing facilities available for the disabled at St James Church and refreshments will be be available at St James and the Methodist Church - see the posters.

Residents along the route will not be able to park at the side of the road on Sunday 6 July. IF YOU HAVE NOT MOVED IT OFF THE ROUTE BY 6.30am IT WILL BE TOWED. You have been warned.

Neighbourhood Forum

The main agenda item for the meetings will be the Tour de France Grand Depart 2014 which takes place on the 5th and 6th July 2014. The meetings will give residents an opportunity to find out more details about the event, the routes and likely disruptions.

Silsden
Thursday 5th June 2014, 7pm - Silsden Town Hall

In the meantime keep and eye on the shop windows displaying notices about events and what will be happening. If you miss something catchup here letour2014.silsden.net

Thank you Peter for the sane and clear information. The scaremongering over this is just ridiculous. It's the third biggest sporting event IN THE WORLD and it's coming to you - you don't have to travel anywhere to see it. They're not likely to turn over their 100 year old important competition to a bunch of half wits without a clue! It's all in hand. Police, hospital staff and paramedics have all had leave cancelled during the event and all have plans IN PLACE to deal with problems. Just relax and enjoy it, if you don't want to enjoy the spectacle (and believe me, it's amazing), either sit in your garden and sun yourselves or go away for the weekend!

Thank you Peter for answering the points raised.

I must have missed the information about porta loos and the plan for emergency services.

As to other comments I do not need to calm down and it was not scaremongering to ask questions that ensure the safety of Silsden residents.

If it helps, I've seen around 30 stages of the Tour, including the London stages when I lived down there.

It is going to be amazing. The scale of this event is incredible - the riders, the press, the helicopters and the caravan make it definitely worth seeing.

ASO - owner and organiser of the Tour is an old hand at this. The tour has been around since 1903 or thereabouts and they are pretty slick at what they do. They'll keep the inconvenience to a minimum, it will go a lot more smoothly than people expect.

It'll be great to see the TV pics from the helicopters of Yorkshire - it's the kind to marketing and promotion that other regions would kill for.

On that subject, the revenue it will generate for the area will be substantial. According to a TfL report from the 2007 event in London the cost of the event was £20m and the revenue generated in London and the south east was estimated to be close to £75. They also estimate that there was a major increase in tourism revenue for 3 to 5 years thereafter.

Don't underestimate the longer term economic benefits - ask the Corsicans how valuable last year's Grand Depart has been to them

Someone up thread mentioned the two/three day stage race they intend to hold next year and thereafter. Good rumour has it that it will the Criterium International. this is a major world cycling event, again organising and owned by ASO. It will attract world class riders and the there teams and is broadcast globally. Our own Chris Boardman won it some years ago as has Chris Froome.
