Peter
Do you do repears on computers then?
Mine make a funny noise from the fan on the power unit when I first switch it on! I have been told that if I leave it then one day it will fail and destroy the whole computer?

Grandad, it sounds like a fan is failing - not good because when it stops your computer may overheat. If you remove the cover and then turn it on you should be able to work out which of several fans is failing. Hopefully it's not the PSU fan.

When you remove the cover you may find there is a lot of dust which you can get rid of with a vacumn cleaner (be careful). CPU & case fans are not difficult to replace, The CPU fan can be a bit tricky if you haven't replaced one before. It is about £10 for a fan.

Although I have not had any repairs done ( I do my own)

I have bought quite a lot of new components from "Computer Universe" on Briggate.
He is pretty reasonable on price, and gets stuff in next day for you.

I agree, the guy by the Beck is expensive, so much so that I would not go to him, as had an idea of what the problem was, and roughly how much it should cost to fix. Went to the guys at Computer Universe, they were soooooo much cheaper, did a good job, and did not speak to me in computer jargon! Would definitely suggest going into see them.

Ciderman, does it turn on at all? what happens when you push the power button? is it just a broken windows installation or does it seem to be hardware? Does it make any beeps, if so how many and what pattern? the computer can actually try to tell you what is wrong with these beeps, normal is one short beep. what model pc is it? I take it's not home built.

New Virus
Seen a new virus the last few days it’s Very Bad
Today we came across a new variation of the Metropolitan Police virus posing as West Yorkshire Police claiming to lock your computer until you pay a fine for looking at suspicious pornographic websites. This is otherwise known as ransomware and is completely bogus.

Be warned: If you manage to remove it, you will be left with a hard drive full of locked files, please read on to find out how to repair them.
How to repairs your damaged files

Well after much messing around trying to write our own script to repair these files it turns out Kaspersky have already made a Decryptor which automatically scans your hardrive for the damaged files and recreating the files without the damaged header. It takes on average 1-3 hours to complete the scan depending on the speed of your computer and amount of data you have.
please note this is a tool developed by Kaspersky and we will not be held responsible for any loss of data, we are purely providing you with the information that helped us repair the West Yorkshire Police ‘Your Computer is Locked’ infection.

I’ve removed the infection but my files are still locked
The files are actually locked as such, the infection renames your files using the following method and alters the header properties so it cant be read.
“locked-<original_name>.<4 random characters>”
example a picture called sarah.jpg could now be called locked-sarah.jpg.ywmy
Some of the files i’ve found have the following extensions YWMY,TJOO,XJQF,NXDQ,ZRZS,BBIH.
Unfortunately simply renaming the file won’t help as it stores information in the header of the file making it unreadable. It mostly only effects your Music, Pictures, Documents and Videos.
The files need to be original and not BACKUPS
