An interesting phrase, and one that deserves more than being tagged onto speed limits. Variations of the term are used in many communities to describe people who come to live there. In consequence after a time they become locals and the cycle continues. Does anyone know how far back, and remember Silsden has been a recorded a settlement for over a thousand years, does one have to traces ones heritage to become a local? 50 years 100 years 250 years 500 years 1000 years I would like to know. |

To be a true cobbydaler your Grandad has to be buried in the Graveyard This is a trus story many years ago I was working for one of the local Textile firms and I was to quote local speaking (can you keep up offcumdens??) 'courting our lass' and had just moved in with her when a old overlooker came up to me and said 'see thas courting a cobbydler then, good on thee' He then came back 20 mins later and said she not a true un though, her dad came from Crosshills just after t war So you lot will have no chance then , so untill thee gran-father is buried int bone yard you always be a offcumden Oh and Silsden is a safer place on a Saturday night than in the 60s and 70s because it was not unknown for a riot down the town and every window broken--Grand Times |

So, even if your granddad was buried in the the local cemetery and had not lived in Silsden then all the descendants, whether or not they live in Silsden, become Cobbydalers while anyone else, even if born and lived there whole life in Silsden becomes an offcumden!! That is the trouble with some of these sayings, they do not stand up to analysis. Now I am a Man of Kent. |

If you are an offcumden then you have to live in Silsden for 100 yrs to be accepted or you can marry a Silsdener and live here for 50 yrs before being accepted. Bear in mind that 'Being Accepted' is not becoming a cobbydaler. To become a cobbydaler generasions of your family have to be born and bred there. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) But how many "real" Silsdeners are left? Despite all the joking, it doesn't really matter whether you're an offcumden or ten generation Silsdener we all live here because it's a great little town filled with great people! I have to confess among the many people I know in the town I wouldn't have a clue what most of them are, neither do I really care! |

I once worked with a bloke from Skipton and he said (jokingly) that Silsdeners couldn't talk right until the canal was built. The more I listen to the old Silsdeners the more I think he could be right! |
