This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Just had a very pleasant man knock on my door telling me that I have not signed the electoral register and need to do this to vote (this, I know). My problem is, that genuine as he seemed and looked, he had no ID. Added to this, I know for a fact that I signed the register in August and got a letter of confirmation in September.
I can't imagine what funny business he could have been up to (all he wanted was a signature) but surely the council must know to send people out with ID and not a tatty photocopy of a letter saying what he was doing...... I hate scaremongering and people moaning at the council for petty things but surely they're not helping their case by silly little oversights like this.

This can't have been bona fide. I would suggest you report it to the police.

there is no mention of anything on the councils website. It does say that from this year each individual person living at a property has to register but nothing about someone coming door to door.they would also not be doing this on a sunday afternoon surely.Report it, it sounds very dodgy.Did he call at your neighbours as well?

I emailed the electoral roll people last night and received a reply this morning - there was indeed a canvasser in the area yesterday! They apologised for him not having ID - apparently he should have had! So mystery solved!

I could appreciate that any canvassing done on a Sunday, would reach a higher target audience, given that more people would be about/available. I find its strange though that anyone canvasses on Sunday.
