This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

What is the horrible smell that from time to time occurs? It does not coincide with muck spreading, although it is very similar. It is in various parts of town, and is awful. Does anyone know what it is? I noticed that someone who did a food review on one of our top restaurants commented on it, so it is not just me is it?

if you think theres a bad smell now you should have lived here when the tannery up bolton road was open if the wind was blowing towards silsden it smelled really bad
but thats what you should expect if you choose to live in the countryside
although the smell you are talking about is probably the over burdened sewers

sounds like a 'hoax' post....could it be someone from a neighbouring town trying to bring down this fine town of ours?

no hoax....just trying to understand what it is! I do live in Silsden, and like it here.
Other people have commented on it, so why not find out where it comes from? I have lived in a number of rural areas before, surrounded by farms, and it has never been like this all year round, only at muck spreading time.
If it is the sewers,as Chaz has suggested, then they need to be fixed on health grounds.

It is an agricultural smell. Sort of thing that happens when there are farms around.
Even though I am an 'offcumden' we had such smells where I lived. Mind you machine gun fire during the day is a bit off putting.

they must have been spreading human waste where you lived cos that smell is definately not agricultural farmers are cutting grass at this time of year not spreading muck on it
That is the smell of the overburdened sewerage system.
if you notice the smell comes and goes i wonder if it`s anything to do with the new holding tanks down by the roundabout ,have to take note of wich way the wind is blowing next time the smell arrives

Of course the farmer is doing it on purpose. Purposely recycling farm waste onto the land as fertiliser. I suppose it could be nice sweet smelling artificial stuff, then that would no doubt get moaned about.

If one chooses to live near fields and farms it is what happens.

One can't help remembering the couple in the south who moved next to a church and then asked for the tower to be soundproofed, as the bells were anoying them.

as the person who started this thread I thought that the smell had gone away, but at least we are not as unlucky as in Cumbria where a farmer has been spreading human waste on the land, causing problems in the local community, and the local MP is now involved. The Environment Agency say this is legal and is becoming more widespread in the country, so let's see what's next!
