IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. At one time evening classes were run by the local authority through the local technical college. Students did not pay the full fee, that came from the local authority. Evening classes were generally related to the local industry and so all the locals, industry and home owners, were quite happy for their rates to be spent to everyones benefit. Two things happened. First of all local industries declined. Secondly people no longer wished to pay local taxes to support local activities, ie. rates. Technical Colleges therefore had to start charging the full rate. Now a class costs anywhere between £60 per hour upwards to run so for 12 people this is £5 an hour so an average course would now be around £10 per session or £300 plus per year. So where before people had paid £30 for a years course it now is £300 and usually much more. Basically work related courses where an individual or employer makes a gain survive. Leisure courses: pay the going rate, or no more. Of course, as you all voted for governments who reduced taxes you can now afford to pay the full rate on the savings from the taxes you no longer pay! Some individuals run course, but of course they need to recover the costs of hiring a building and or course their own income. The £60 plus per hour still applies. For those who have retired there is U3A - the University of the Third Age which is basically mutual education and learning for pleasure. Costs still apply but much less as they are to cover practical costs rather than wages. Of course there is no reason why 'mutual' evening classes could not be created for those in employment. I have not heard of such a thing but see no reason why it could not happen. Maybe there is a place for Mutual Education unless anyone knows of something similar already taking place. |

re being inspired. Corinne may be interested in Coursera. The internet is changing everything including education. Coursera is a new venture at a high level - top universities around the world are offering internet video courses. I am in the middle of one and it is demanding but very high level. All courses are free (I suspect the venture is a pilot for what may become much larger and commercial). a google search for Coursera will reveal all. Hope it may be of some use! |

"Of course, as you all voted for governments who reduced taxes you can now afford to pay the full rate on the savings from the taxes you no longer pay!" Old Miner - this would be a fabulous slogan for the Labour Party campaign in the next general election. Particularly with regard to the NHS. It would have to be tweaked but it says so much. |

I do not want to wizz off topic but it is an unfortunate fact of life that most people do not relate the taxes they pay to what the government provides. Mind you, governments make very little effort to educate everyone on the real situation. When I did my O levels in the 1960s calculation of personal income tax was one of the topics; is it still the case today? |
