KEIGHLEY NEWS 5/6/2014 JUNE 6, 1944, was perhaps the single most important day in 20th century British history. It was exactly 70 years ago that more than 200,000 British, American and Canadian troops stormed five Normandy beaches and started the offensive which would eventually bring about the defeat of Nazi Germany almost a year later. |

I seem to recall that we did "back up" the French and got a good hiding at Dunkirk for our trouble. The war was not winnable until the USA and Russia were involved. |

They did infact continue to fight for long enough for the bulk of British army - and some of their own army to escape. Even the BEF could not withstand the Blitzkrieg of Germany. The Germans were infact unstoppable at that time and to fight to the last man would have meant complete destruction. They bought us enough time to regroup across the channel after Dunkirk so we could make a proper stand later on. Also, the Free French forces continued to fight as our allies throughout the whole WW2. The French still had troops around the world that joined us later. |

My late husband landed on the Normandy beaches - and we went together to revisit it and to see the D day museum at Arromanches. He spent 6 years of his young life away from his first wife and children. The bravery of those men and women is uncountable. Thankyou |

dogcatcher. Are you on the same planet as the rest of us? On the few days leading up to D-Day, their were nearly 20,000 French civilians killed, mainly by Allied bombing who were paving the way for the landings, plus over 5,000 on D-Day itself. So don't go on about the French being weak or cowardly. It took very brave men and women of all the Allied troops to make us the free democratic country of today! |

dogcatcher Your confrontational manner is restricting your ability to learn the truth. |

Check your facts Dogcatcher instead of posting your foul xenophobic conspiracy theories. Operation Dynamo (or the Miracle of Dunkirk) happened between 27th May and 4th June when the BEF (the British) and three divisions of French troops got cut off by a well planned and perfectly executed German advance. The French did not surrender until 22nd of June. |

Dogcatcher this is not the place and definitely NOT the time to express those sort of views. I would ask you to respect the memories of the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedom we take for granted today. |

www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/fall_france_01.shtml "in purely military terms, the Germans were a vastly superior force (although not in numbers). They used their mechanisation and manoeuvre more effectively, and benefited from domination in the air. German military doctrine was more advanced, and generally their commanders coped much better with high-tempo operations than did their Allied counterparts." |
