This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

Its in the Craven Herald saying nearly 800 residents would be affected then says its that number of properties which is a lot more than 800 residents

Which irresponsible clown at the Met decided tthat it was about time we should issue such a warning!!!
It goes without saying that anyone living below a reservoir or dam could be at risk, so why the need to do this. To be me it "beggars belief"

This is just silly, Bfd Met must not have enough to do.

They've said themselves that the likelihood of a reservoir breach is extremely low and there is “no cause for concern”.

Having had a quick google our dam appears to be an embankment type and the main risk with these is that they are "overtopped" and water begings to run down the back of the dam and washes away the embankment. However, look at the size of the spillway, it's a big one. I recon it could easily pass thru far more water than would run off from the catchment area of the res.

It would be interesting to know when the last engineers report on the dam was and what it said. They have to be done yearly. Wonder if YW would be willing to share it.

jonno....I agree with you that this may be silly, but it could have an effect on flood insurance costs if we all declared we had letters from the Council about it. Is it a relevant fact we have to declare? Can our own Council shed any light on this new revelation?

The latter should have pointed out that an individual living below a dam probably has more chance of winning the lottery jackpot than the dam collapsing.

Probability and chance should be taught much earlier in schools. When one understands the odds then one understands that most gambling is a fools game. Of course there is nothing wrong in playing the fool now and again. Understanding the 14 000 000 to 1 odds on a jackpot win is part of the fun.

yet another example of local government waste - in this time of austerity - brd met still has money to spare to pay someone to investigate , produce and post this type of ridiculas , nonsensical, scaremongering information.
