This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

This forum seems to be very much about being miserable, pessimistic. If you just went by the moaning and griping you would assume we live in a shit-hole with dog muck and everywhere, with nothing but bad drivers, and deviants. This forum often gives me a headache as its so focused on bad things.

We all live here so there must be something good about Silsden that keeps us here. So come on lets have some positive comments for a change.

I like that you don't have to go out of town for most things we have a abundance of shops, pubs, cafes on our doorstep. If you have to venture we are close to nice areas to visit you csn equally as easily get into the Yorkshire Dales as you can get into Leeds or Bradford, the best of both worlds for me.

I moved here from Harrogate five years ago.
Best thing I ever did, Silsden is a much nicer place to live.

this post has been edited 1 time(s)

I agree I have lived in Humberside (now it is North Lincolnshire), Lincolnshire proper, South Yorkshire, Hampshire, another part of West Yorkshire and even dare I say it Lancashire. However, Silsden is the nicest place I have lived and the friendliest too.

it's a proper contained town that stands on it's own & not just a part of a larger sprawl, & it sits within beautiful countryside that is so easily accessible

I love the positive thread happy :)

I love Silsden, and I was born here too.

We have fantastic schools, facilities, transport and scenery ... but what makes it a extra special place is that DO have community. When 'Ben' lost his £100 at Christmas we came together and helped .. When a little boy needed fundraising for treatment at Aireview .... we came together. (and thats just 2 examples of many)

Every place 'like' Silsden has all the same problems too, but what we have is more... as long as there a people who care about Silsden and the people in it then Silsden will always be a very special and positive place to me ... I wouldn't raise my kids here if I didn't think so!!

(I didn't mention the word 'dog-poo' once !!! oh dammit I just did !!!!)

I have lived here for just over two years and i love it. I often walk in the park and i can honestly say i have never seen any problems with dogs, i'm not a dog owner. I use the local shops, the range of butchers is great, i like the local pub's, especially the Kings and the Robin, looking forward to the Lion opening too. The Silsden gala is great fun as is the bonfire night. I even find the moaning to be of a very high quality

I always point out that Sildens has the benefits of being in the country on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and the benefits of being on the edge of a large Metropolitan Area. Just compare our public transport with what is across the border!
Silsden has all the facilities needed, is close to all forms of public transport, is close to a major hospital that has not been flagged up with any major problems.
I find the whinging quite amusing and am always reminded of the WW1 cartoon with two squaddies resting in a shell hole. One is obviously moaning as the other says 'if you know of anothe 'ole then go it' (or something like that)

Having lived in Silsden all my life, I often tend to have a blinkered vision - the grass is always greener! Silsden is NOT a bad place to live, it does have a lot going for it. Someone placed a link on here, some time ago, for a website relating to "Chav" towns. The site was really quite offensive towards Silsden. It wasn't until I looked at Keighley, Bingley, Ilkley that I realised that the site was comic based, not portraying the realities of the selected town or village.

The town needs to be independent of BMDC to move forward, whether it reverts back to a parish council or transfers control to NYCC.

I think the bit about Keighley was actually a true reflection!!!

What you have to remember is that the number of regular posters on this forum are only a very very small percentage of the residents of Silsden, mainly a dozen people with something they feel the need to gripe about.

I recently spoke to a group who had rented a boat from Silsden and they said that they had looked on THIS website and had suddenly had second thoughts about coming, they did come and had a cracking time both in the town and in the surroundings.

Remember if you Google Silsden one of the first sites listed is this one, so why not try and portray a better image of the town.

It is true that this site is one of the first a search for Silsden brings up.

However - when one clicks on the local new link one comes directly to this forum. Now this is a forum, NOT NEWS.

I suggest minor changes to this site.

1: A (good) new page from Local News

2: The forum separated from news link.

Interesting you don't think YOU are making news when you write on the forum happy :) and I wonder when the last time was when you looked at the front page of the site and used the side bar navigation to explore the local Silsden information happy :)

As I live in Silsden I can separate the real from the un-real in the forum. To an outsider not knowing the place the differences are not obvious.

While I do use the forum for news I do not consider it a news bulletin board. My suggestion is a possible solution to a problem which no doubt affects many local sites such as this one.

This news feature was difficult to maintain and I made the decision to stop updating it because the forum news was local and always current. I will move the item you referred to an archive (probably under local information). There are links to local newspaper items on the front page as well.

Silsden is a great place to live. However, Silsden is changing and in ways not aways for the better! We must fight to keep it somewhere great to live and value what we have. happy :)happy :)

I've moved away from Silsden. I look at your website from time to catch up on local news.

While Silsden's pavements probably are still knee deep in dog muck and the Silsden.net contributer's obsessions with human rights put Bulgarians off visiting I always look forward to calling by.

Good post!
I moved to yorkshire in the last 4 years and love it all. I moved to Silsden last year and people warned me about how closed a community and what bad rep it has...BUT no issues for me - great people (always exceptions anywhere around the world) and the location is great. I would say the local shops seem to reflect both positives and negatives (ie, great looking flower shop/wedding shop/kitchen/local produce shop Vs some pubs stuggling and shops not opening out of work hours, some traffic issues and THAT co-op).
So NO COMPLAINTS from me. No different unless you live in the Vatican state as the Pope!
