The proposal put forward to the council is for the removal of 1 fire engine next April and 5 firefighters. After they promised us tax payers that front-line services would not be affected!!

If the second fire engine from Silsden goes to Keighley, then surely Keighley will need five recruits? Unless they want five volunteers from the general public who are passing the station to help man the engine!!

The proposal is for the second engine to be moved to Keighley as 'back-up' but this will not be manned and will not be available for callsangry. It will only be used as a reserve to draft people in should there be large scale incidents across the district. The news reports are a little misleading as in effect Silsden and the district IS losing a frontline emergency appliance.

Do not put your faith in what statistics say until you have considered what they do not say.

Two people were taken to Airedale Hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation following a blaze in Eastburn early this morning.

They had escaped from a burning cottage in Main Road.

The man and woman were outside the property being dealt with by ambulance crews when firefighters, who received the call at 12.20am, arrived at the scene.

Two crews from Keighley fire station and one from Silsden attended.

Keighley watch commander Gary Davies said it was unclear initially whether there was anyone still inside the two-storey detached cottage.

“We sent in six firefighters with breathing apparatus,” he said.

“The fire was at its fiercest in the living room area but flames were going up the staircase.”

The building was extensively damaged.

Fire investigators are at the scene trying to establish the cause of the fire.

I just looked up where Green lane is... halfway to Skipton across the tops! Just goes to show why we need a fire station in Silsden.

I think one reason given for reducing fire cover in Silsden was that Keighley fire engines could get to Silsden quickly. But at 11-15pm with no traffic on the road Silsden still got there first.
Imagine a fire that required 2 fire engines in Silsden even assuming there was a engine available(not already called out) at a time when the roads are snarled up.
