Is it this country that's going barking mad or me? I am not a fan of the Thatchers by any means BUT how can you sack someone for using the name of a kids toy to describe someone? There are dozens of the things on Ebay called by their name! How can you suspend a nurse for offering to pray for a patient? Lunacy. I could go on and on, the country is going barking mad! |

you could say its going to the dogs!! seriously though I agree, best not to think about it too much its too stressful |

The trouble is that it's on the news and every time you pick a paper up! Some other piece of PC nonsense! |

It's keeping a lot of people in work though Alan! When I was a boy, (years and years ago) I was told, "Sticks and stone may break my bones? But words will never hurt me." Why is everybody so soft now? |
![]() |
alan |
Because the words are destroying peoples lives and murdering freedom on speech in the country. When I was a boy you could express your opinion, now you have to measure your words. Imagine Enoch Powells speech today! |
![]() |
alan |
Added to that grandad the royals are removing those same toys from their tourist shops because they don't want to cause offence! Lunacy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The problem as always is not political correctness, but the people who enjoy imposing it. There are plenty of cross cultural insults that no one uses anymore. At one time there were plenty regarding catholics and protestants, workers and nobility, skilled and unskilled etc. Most have died out, who cares what religion anyone is so long as you do not try and impose it. The nurse offering to pray for the lady was serious, but it was taken by the lady in the context of anyone saying it. It was only when she mentioned it to some jobsworth that the 'problem' was percieved. A gollywog, orignally gollywogg by the way, is a doll of a black person. If it was not for the ending and its insulting origins it is unlikely that all this fuss would be made. In the spirit of cross culturism, again except for the end of the name, it should be seen in a positive light. Do not worry about freedoms though. It is our freedom that permits us to discuss and debate at length the PC culture. It is becoming a big joke, the but of much humour so will slowly lose its effectiveness. Start worrying when debating the situation becomes frowned on. There are still a few taboo topics that never get mentioned, but if they are out in the open there is no problem with freedom. I think it is ascribed to Voltaire the phrase - which I am probably paraphrasing 'I disagree with your beliefs and opinions, but I am prepared to die in protecting your right to have them' Of course this only means those beliefs and opinions which are not criminal, barbaric or immoral. Of course what is criminal, barbaric or immoral is a debate in itself. Is not life wonderful. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) now what are the BBC going to do after Jeremy Clarkson has called our dear M.P a Scottish one eyed idiot? The truth is, he is Scottish, blind in one eye, and an idiot, but should J.C lose his job for giving his opinion. The house of commons say yes he should go and are asking for his removal stat. |
![]() |
alan |
JC was correct in at least two of the three parts, without debate. So why should he lose his job for calling him an idiot? He won't because the BBC can't afford to lose him anyway! Only time will tell if GB is an idiot, the trouble is that if he is he is one of the lesser idiots of the three parties right now! |
![]() |
jonno |
Leave Clarkson alone! No one takes him seriously as a political commentator. Did they sack Ross? No. Should they have sacked Carol Thatcher? No. Mindless moronic PC loving lickspitles! (gotta love that word) |
![]() |
jonno |
In fact, worse than anything they said, this has gone largely unreported, although that's changing a bit now and the intertubes get hold of this... www.badscience.net (site seems down ATM, maybe overwhelmed with hits) the story about Jeni B, a presenter on LBC radio, who ranted for a good half hour about the perils of MMR and how it will give your kids autism (a lie that has now been thoroughly de-bunked). If people can get the sack for saying stupid things it should be this woman! (Yes I sat and listened to it and she is every bit as bad as the reports) |

Keep Clarkson Keep Thatcher Sack Ross My views ![]() |

Alan, your argument is persuasive, I would like to subscribe to your newsletter ![]() Seriously, I'm in two minds about Ross, he surely knew what he was saying was offensive rather than funny. But then I don't particularity like him so I may be biased. |
![]() |
alan |
Ross was just plain offensive, absolutely nothing to do with PC. He's just a plain old-fashioned ignorant pratt! Don't like him by the way ![]() |

It's irrelevant whether or not you or I think GB is an idiot. The fact is JC thinks he is and said so, and for that the m.p's are asking for his immediate removal on three counts, being offensive to blind people, scottish people and of course idiots. Now I think they're the idiots at the moment for wasting House of commons time and public money on such a debate, after all I'm sure they have other things to discuss. If my opinion counts for anything I vote JC for prime minister! and as james may would say it's a load of c**k! |
![]() |

just on another note on pc correctness I could not believe in a recent episode of coronation street they covered up the cross in the church wedding scene in case it offended other religions!!!! are we to hide all religious monuments from other beliefs eyes? perhaps they will all go underground and become secret societies!! |

it's noted that although the beeb say they won't be taking furthur action the labour scottish minister(who reminds them there are 5 million constituents paying the licence fee)and the RNIB have also asked for furthur action to be taken against jez. |

PC OR NOT TO BE...... Obituary London Times An Obituary printed in the London Times......... Interesting and sadly rather true. 'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouth wash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement . Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust His wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, his son, Reason He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights I Want It Now; Someone Else Is To Blame; I'm A Victim Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing. |

Following the saga of the cold school there was the school website www.hothfield.ngfl.ac.uk/HOLDING/WELCOME.html Besides a few small back views there are NO pictures of the children. Am I missing something, or is this another example of political correctness gone mad? |

quoteFollowing the saga of the cold school there was the school website www.hothfield.ngfl.ac.uk/HOLDING/WELCOME.html Besides a few small back views there are NO pictures of the children. Am I missing something, or is this another example of political correctness gone mad? I'm afraid this is the problem generated by the Soham murders and the paranoia about pedophiles these days. There only has to be one parent who objects to the picture of their little darling being published and it prevents a picture of a group of children being publish - it's easier not to bother ![]() This doesn't seem to apply to newspapers, they seem to be able to publish any picture complete with your details including your age. ![]() |

alan |
Quite correct I would say in this instance! ![]() |
![]() |
wahiba |
Quite correct? Pictures or no pictures? As I understand it the probability of a child being abducted by a weirdo (I think the Soham case involved someone who was not a paedophile, rather someone who was mentally ill) is minute compared with being in a fatal road accident. The biggest child killer has four wheels, not two legs. |

so wahiba, how do you get about?do you walk or do you fly? |
![]() |
alan |
Quite correct that there are no pictures 'wahiba'! I do not think you are living in the real world. The fact there isn't cannot be attributed to political correctness and I do not think your argument is following a safe course! |
![]() |
wahiba |
Why is wondering why a web site about a school has no pictures of the kids at the school 'not living in the real world'? If the 'real world' is mass paranoia then as far as I am concerned it is a very 'unreal world' As for 'how do I get about' mainly on foot and public transport. The answer actually suggests that a certain child mortality rate from vehicles is acceptable because we have to move around!!! |
![]() |
alan |
Completely off topic now 'wahiba'! |

It is better for school websites to have some unidentifiable pictures than none at all. Schools are in a very difficult position where they have the responsibility of educating and keeping our children safe during school hours. Pictures published on websites can be seen worldwide, it is no longer the case a local paper publishes an event and it is seen only by the people who buy the paper. What if there was an adopted child in the school? It could be a disaster for all concerned if the child was recognised on the internet. On other websites before a picture of a child can be publish you have to get guardian approval and then there only has to be one child (without approval) in a group picture to make a non event picture. You can't take pictures of your children at a swimming pool because there may be other children in the picture - madness! I take pictures at public events (Galas etc) but I never include any names (or any other details). There is now a culture in this country that people now question why you are taking pictures in public places, why? This is just one aspect of PC gone mad, trust and "innocent until proved guilty" seems to have gone out of the window. ![]() ![]() |

Peter - I had an instance where someone took pictures of my daughter at 15 in a shop, without her knowledge or permission. I spotted him and asked him to show me the pictures on his digital camera. I wonder what YOU would do as a parent? I made him delete them! |
![]() |
Peter |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) There are public places and public places. I would not regard a shop a public place in the context of this discussion. I would feel extremely uncomfortable taking pictures in a shop without permission of the shop and the subject... spying springs to mind! Public places: where there is a public event and you can probably see the sky. Common sense should be used. |
![]() |
alan |
I agree totally Peter. But there are times when you have to use your judgement on peoples intentions, in public or not. Sadly it is my exeprience that those with bad intent do not come with a lable on their head! |
![]() |
wahiba |
I would agree that someone taking a picture of your daughter in a shop is a bit weird. By the way though, a court order is require, even by the police, to delete images from a memory card. This is a problem the train spotting brigade encounter regularly, and juding by the latest edition of Amateur Photographer an MP having her picture taken in a local bus station!!! The picture paranoia is a bit wierd really. It has to be balanced against the security camera growth where anyone and everyones pictures are being taken and stored all over the place. Also, did anyone else notice the Google Earth car in the area a while back. It was at Steeton, coming from Silsden direction, so I reckon we have been googled. |
![]() |
alan |
Far better ways of getting someone to delete pictures than a court order 'wahiba' ![]() |
