Topic : Sykes Lane smoke from fire |
|
andytee853 |
Woke up this morning to a houseful of smoke from the smoky fire at the end of Sykes Lane. Because it's a still day, the pollution is hanging over Silsden and slowly drifting halfway to Skipton. This is a health hazard and is causing a real nuisance. I feel really sorry for those living on the Woodside road estate as they are in the thick of it. Does anyone know who is responsible for it? |

The regulations and responsibilities to your neighbours Let your neighbours know when you’re going to light it and where it is. Avoid lighting in unsuitable weather conditions. Smoke hangs in the air on damp, still days and in the evening. Avoid burning when the wind will carry the smoke over roads or into other people’s property. Check the air quality and avoid burning when it is "poor" or "very poor". Only burn dry material Never burn household rubbish, rubber or anything containing plastic, foam or paint. Never use old engine oil, mentholated spirits or petrol to light the fire or to encourage it. Avoid burning at weekends and on bank holidays when people are more likely to be in their garden. Never leave the fire unattended or leave it to smoulder – douse it with water if necessary. Remember to check for hibernating hedgehogs and sleeping pets! What are the penalties? Under the Highways (Amendment) Act 1986 anyone lighting a fire and allowing smoke to drift across the road faces a fine of up to £2000 if it endangers traffic. There may be local bye-laws which restrict the times which bonfires are allowed, |

I went out this morning and took photos over Silsden. Also went down Sykes lane and took some snaps. Met a family in a white van with "licensed waste carrier" on the back who said it wasn't their fire but would mention it to the owner... Am going to send the photos to Paul at the council and I encourage others to do the same. The more evidence we send them the better. |

I have land near Silsden and we often burn old wood, pallets etc , and we try adhere to the rules in the previous post, on occasions we notify the fire brigade so they know its an attended blaze. I recently had an enforcement letter from the Council, telling me I cannot burn wood on my land and it has to be skipped or re cycled ? I wrote and enquired , "what if I pile it up for a year and burn it on Nov 5" or, "what if I cut it up and Burn it in a chimenea on my garden " I also genuinely enquired why would I skip it and see it potentially landfilled (I know skips are meant to be emptied and re cycled , but ............) when by burning it it doesn't add to land fill. so far no reply!!!!! can anyone tell me whats the laws on burning on a farm etc ? |

Wastes that you can burn on your farm The waste types that can be disposed of by burning without an environmental permit are restricted to vegetation, untreated wood and untreated timber. You can only burn these wastes at the place where they were produced. For example, you can burn the following types of waste either on a bonfire or in an incinerator: logs and branches from fallen or chopped down trees untreated timber from fence mending untreated timber packaging, eg pallets hedge trimmings crops and vegetation leaves and bark Before you burn these wastes, you must first register for an exemption from environmental permitting with the Environment Agency. Find out about burning exemptions and how to register for them on the Environment Agency website. You must not burn any other types of waste you produce on your farm. If you do, you will be committing a criminal offence and you could be prosecuted. |

"I also genuinely enquired why would I skip it and see it potentially landfilled (I know skips are meant to be emptied and re cycled , but ............) when by burning it it doesn't add to land fill." The council is right. You shouldn't burn it at all because air pollution is a serious problem and contributes to the death of more than 30,000 people a year in the UK. That's more than smoking kills. Also, as my first post has stated, we don't want to breathe the pollution from your dirty open fires! Be a responsible neighbor and take it down the tip! |

Ive just been talking to an enviroment officer from Bradford who asked would anybody affected from the burning on Sykes Lane to contact the council with their concernes and if they have any photos, times of fires, reg numbers of vehicles tipping etc to supply the council with them. The more people complain the more teeth the council will have dealing with this matter. An up to date email address is eh.admin@bradford.gov.uk PLEASE lets try and get this issue sorted once and for all. |

I'm now communicating with an enforcement officer at Bradford Council. Filling in the online form (link above) has indeed gone to the right person. We now need to gather more evidence about the burning of waste on this land and send this to Bradford. Please take photos when it happens and also take the registration details of vehicles that are dropping off waste to be burned at the site. |
