This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

The structure you see at the moment is the carrier for railway sleepers which will form the flood barrier. This will allow the barrier to be slid into place at time of need.

The structure will be hidden behind a wall, and flower beds will hide most of the what you can see at the moment from Kirkgate. To keep costs down most of the work has been done on a voluntary basis and at the moment it's waiting on Keighley College to construct the walling required. The wall where the waste bin is at the moment will be removed to open the ford up to it's full width, the original cobbles for the ford causeway are under the walling.

The barrier will be locked for safety reasons, but I believe the idea is to provide the neighbours flooding would affect the most the means to use the barrier when required, and there will also be an agency who will be able to provide unlocking access 24/7.

This has to be better than sandbags.

The barrier is a joint scheme by Silsden Youth Council and Silsden Environmental Group.
