At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. People believe want they want to believe - or what their prejudices tell them. The article behind your headline identifies that over half of the council budget is spent on care for children and vulnerable adults. Do the readers think these people should be left to fend for themselves, even though they cannot. The majority of the rest of the money goes on other services such as refuse collection, street cleaning. Do the readers think the council should leave the bins full, streets left unclean, etc. The remaining balance goes to fund the police and fire services - more essential services. The article identified three specific areas of where monies hadn't been spent wisely. These included an office refurbishment, coloured lights on buildings in Bradford, and a sculpture. I cannot defend these decisions, which totalled £35,000.00 (Thirty Five Thousand Pounds). What about the over £200,000,000.00 (Two Hundred Million Pounds) of funding that the Tory government has withdrawn to Bradford council. I think that makes a bigger headline and people need to really get their heads around the fact that services are being cut because of Central Government cuts to local authorities. |

Another part of the article has this graphic: ![]() These are the parishes Bradford want to build houses on greenbelt land, not affordable houses but band D and F houses which is their policy to generate a sustainable income. There is a flaw in this plan because there is no infrastructure to support the new houses (or jobs). They would get more income from business rates, it should be jobs first and housing second. The budget also calls for a capital spend of £100M in the centre of Bradford, this will be paid for by asset stripping Silsden and other places in the outer regions. There are not many facilities left to cut out here now but cuts don't seem to apply to the centre of Bradford. |

In the past 12 months I have had to deal with Bradford Social Services and the NHS in respect of two elderly people losing the capacity to look after themselves. All the dealings with Bradford Social Services have been to the highest standard and I have no complaints about the treatment or service I recieved. the same for the NHS. I had dealings with two of the Local Authority Care homes where both people spent time while being assessed before going into permanent care homes. Considering all the stuff said about Bradford City Council they again were efficient and effective. It seems to me that those who complain generally have no idea of how a local authority operates. Also that the financial restrictions enforced on local authorities by central government are probably worse than what old time communist regimes imposed on their people. Too many people think that there is a money tree from which all their services are paid for. Sorry, but there is no such thing as a free lunch. All the wining about local authorities is political in origin and has nothing to do with providing a good service and everything to do with pampered political egos. Well the the competence of our current leadership is currently being shown in the Brexit fiasco. God only knows how that will end but it is certainly going to cost us all quite a lot in higher taxes and lost services. |

quoteWhat has Bradford got to do with Brexit? Bradford is taking our money to spend in the centre of Bradford, and to get the money they are removing our facilities and building more houses - houses which will of no benefit to us - that's policy. |
