This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

For me, PFI was the big mistake they made. Still costing millions now, and forever.. But NHS is sacred ground, can't be reformed by anyone.

The author Tom Bower is not afraid to upset people but what he says must be the truth because nobody sues him.
PFI is a good idea if it gets a hospital built but the terms agreed are shocking and if the Tories can cancel junior doctors contracts and impose new ones the can surely do the same with PFI.
Take Halifax hospital, which cost £65m to build but by last year Calderdale's health authority owe £290m. Money will be paid for 60 years and not until 2028 can the debt be settled with a £200m buy out.
Im sure Wonga could have offered a cheaper deal. The blame for Halifax is jointly with the Tories who set up the deal and Labour who signed it.

PFI was originally a Tory idea, but very few schemes were set up by them. It was hugely accelerated by Gordon Brown when he went to the Treasury, and the taxpayer will pay the price over the next 30/40 years. Funding which could have been used for medical reasons will be wasted on interest and high maintenance charges.
A bit like GB's idea to build 2 aircraft carriers in his constituency, ... once the contracts were signed, they could not be cancelled.
The doctors contract is a renewal one due to be set up, I believe, not an existing one being cancelled.
