Yeah we heard those until the early hours of the morning last night but we aren't that close to those either and it wasn't as loud as the bells and the bells are further away! Plus unless you live right by the fair the loud speaker is quite a dull sound unlike the bells which have now been going on over 2 hours!

They are visiting ringer attempting a peal which is some 5040 changes without a sequence repetition. A skill which was invented a long time before electricity, a shame you can't hear them properly because of the noise of the loudspeakers at the fair. The peal, if it is successful, will take about 3 hours to complete.

Be thankful the bells can be rung in Silsden. Why not go along to a practice night on Thursday? happy :)

Actually I can't hear the fair at all, I can just hear the church bells. I appreciate it a lot more now I know there is a particular and important reason for it. I hope they succeed, they are coming up on 3 hours now.

What a load of moaners......The gala is once a year and a fantastic day for Silsden.Instead of sitting at home whinging bout bells and loudspeakers you should have come into town and supported both the gala and the church.

I quite liked the sound of the bells, I thought it contributed nicely to the Gala atmosphere and wasn't disturbing at all, and I live quite close. What was more annoying was my neighbors tinny, crackly radio blaring out in the back garden!

Never moaned about the Gala and I was there out enjoying it and supporting the day. The only reason I wouldn't go down to the church is because 1. I'm not religious so tend not to go regardless of why I'm going and 2. I didn't know it was even happening until they were half an hour or so from finishing anyway so if I happened to want to go I didn't know it was on to plan for such a thing.
I understand most enjoy that sort of thing and there is nothing wrong with a bit of bell ringing but it's perfectly acceptable for some people who aren't used to it, to notice them a bit more when they are going on for 3 hours and raise a point as to why.

You don't have to be religious to ring bells, you don't even have to attend church. If you can ride a bike you can probably ring a church bell. There is a bit more to it than that to be able to swing a bell the weight of a Ford Focus around using a bit of rope but Deborah would be pleased to see you at Silsden on a Thursday night.

I ring at Kildwick, practice night is Wednesday and we start at 7.30pm. We are always looking for new ringers. Bell ringing is a team effort, we need ringers and new ringers are always welcome.

I didn't say you had to be religious to ring the bells. I was replying to someone who said I should have gone down to support the bell ringing and said I wouldn't go to a church as I am not religious. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and on this occasion I just happened to not like the bells ringing for such a long period of time without warning but was quite happy to hear there was an important reason for it. Sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion.
