This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

The local council elections seem to be a 'hot topic' on Silsden.net as do subjects that would seem to be a vote winner for a prospective town councillor, such as crime in Silsden and the dog fouling epidemic. If someone from Silsden were to stand for election who would take these subjects on would they get your vote? What else do you think this person should address? Could a regular person with limited local council knowledge do a good job?

Craven Herald 12 April 2012

Election hopeful asked to leave Silsden Town Council meeting
www.cravenherald.co.uk/news/9645910.print/

..... Mr Rowley said. “This was a disgrace and a blow for local democracy. This is the thin end of the wedge and totally unacceptable.

“I was humiliated in public with no legal foundation to support their reason, these meetings are open to the public regardless of where they reside.”

Mr Rowley said he would seek legal advice unless he received a public apology and the resignation of the chairman, vice-chairman and town clerk.....
__________________________

So after Mr Rowley has got his pound of flesh, and if he wins on the 3 may? Will we have a town council? I can't see there being many volunteers for the job of Mayor when your local area councillor is likely to sue you. sad :(

A little bit of round table discussion is needed very quickly I think before this really gets out of hand.

To be eligible to by a Town/Parish councillor you have to live or work within the parish boundary.
So why is it that a Bradford councillor can stand for a seat in a parish when they don’t live in it? And don’t say they are standing for Bradford so it is OK so long as they live in Bradford, because how can they pretend to know the problems of the local area and the people who live in it if they haven’t lived in it for some time?

a public apology was all that was needed over a week has gone by and it looks like there isn't going to be one. I agree with you Peter, heads need to be banged together and an adult round the table conversation held asap

Nobody is coming out of all this carryon with any credit, sadly.

Everyone concerned has just stuck to their position, and Peter is right, this should be sorted asap before it leaves an even more bitter taste.

However, I don't think it will happen.

I've been checking up on this Andy Rowley and he looks like he's a worker. He knocked on my door the other night. That's never happened here before. I think I've very much misjudged this guy. I was reading he collected thousands of names in a petition to save post offices and police stations. It's all on google. I going to give him a chance he's even been a prison officer so he's seems down to earth. Hmmm I like what I've read about him so far. Anyone who takes on the town council at thier own game mus t have something about him. Yep he's got my vote.

laugh :Dlaugh :Dlaugh :Dlaugh :Dlaugh :Dlaugh :D

DO NOT BELIEVE ALL YOU READ ON THIS FORUM WHEN THE SUBJECT INVOLVES THE 3 MAY LOCAL ELECTIONS. IF IT IS WRITTEN BY A NEW POSTER THEN THEY MAY BE MAKING MISCHIEF.

DIRTY POLITICS HAVE COME TO SILSDEN

PS I wonder who Morph is on the Yorkshire Post article? Morph likes to call the discussion after the article a blog - it's no such thing and the Yorkshire Post should look at the credentials of some of the posters if they can write such anonymous statements.

As Morph suggested, I've just googled Andy Rowley. I'm very impressed by his credentials as a Children's TV producer and BBC production manager, not to mention his spell playing Rugby Union for Sale FC, and his time co-presenting 'The Scrum' on BBC London. Then there's his time in the band 'Big Bad Voodoo Daddy'(all true - check Google - we all know Google never lies). Seriously though, five pages in to a search, and nothing at all about the person I suppose we'd better call the 'real' Andy Rowley. Some links would be handy to to let us check the claims! (of course, if Andy is the singer with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, maybe he'll do a benefit concert in Silsden!)

Peter, I think this thread is heading off topic.
It should be about what the council should consider not discuss the people involved in the election.

One matter for the council to consider is giving a grant to the local youth organisations who provide activities for Silsden youngsters. These kids benefit from all types of projects aimed at giving them opportunities. Some are run by volunteers.

I'm confused why is somebody standing for the ward Silsden is in when they live in Shipley? Surely it would make sense to put forward a candidate who knows the area and can represent the interests of the residents!

Quick to defend democracy when he feels "humiliated" and victimised but perfectly fine to depend on the blind(loyal) Tory votes to get anyone they want in. As far as I am concerned if they are not from the area they are supposed to represent I will not even consider voting for them!

Interesting how you prevent people saying positive things about some candidates but back others who have a vested interest and close links to this forum.

Well this will be the last time I use this forum and I will spread the word to my mates on how you treat people who post here. I'm not willing to share my details for the very reason you proved today because you can post them. Simply put I don't trust you to keep my details private and that's my right to withhold them. Just as it is your right to remove my log in password. I was introduced to this site through a friend and I won't be using it again I can see just how friendly you are. Well I for one know who I will be voting for and here are the links I found about Rowley which I liked and that's my right.

And there's more. By the way he came to my door on the same night as the town council meeting which he was asked to leave. He was also in the area the day before and I have never had a politician knock on my door here ever. I won't be using this site again thank you

"Andrew Rowley, of Shipley, took to the streets at the weekend to collect more names to add to the 1,800 who have already signed up to the campaign." Telegraph and Argus
"Campaigner Andy Rowley took to the streets of Shipley, Saltaire, Windhill and Wrose to campaign against any future closures by Post Office Limited." Keighley News
"Shoppers have been signing a petition to get Shipley's iconic clocktower ticking again. Andy Rowley has taken it on himself to set up the petition to stop the market town being stuck in time." Keighley News

Thing being this is not "Shipley". The above statements show he is a great candidate for Shipley!

I can't believe the recent events in Silsden on the political front...there is a nasty smell about these days, and it's not good for the town image overall.

There is a lack of leadership in our council, and some dubious accusations, some censorship of this forum, and sadly the worst aspect of people is coming into view now.

Roll on when the elections are over, and we have the elected representatives we deserve. I suspect nothing will change, but we will all be the worse for it in the long term.....respect has gone, sadly.

Personal issues have taken over from the good of the community.

So ICU > Morph > Morph1

....and this is a little excerpt you didn't include in your linked praise of Mr Rowley

THIS WAS WHEN MR ROWLEY WAS A PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE FOR SHIPLEY IN 2010
The Tories, with local candidate Andrew Rowley, have at least identified that Shipley needs to be a big priority for any Councillor in the area, but their solutions are beyond woeful.

Fixing the clock tower – which Mr. Rowley is desperate to take credit for despite much of the credit belonging to the hard working Town Centre manager Yvonne Crossley, who had been working on it for several years – obviously helps Shipley look better, but businesses will not decide whether or not to invest in Shipley based on whether the clock tower works, which Mr Rowley suggests.

Transport infrastructure, investment and local employment availability and skills will play a much bigger part.

Similarly their ‘big idea’ to scrap the car parking charge in the town centre to encourage people to shop was a shallow and meaningless sop to voters. I’ve been in Shipley town centre shopping in the pouring rain and the car park still had cars queuing to park.

The various posts/threads relating to the May local elections and the recent actions of Silsden Town Council and in particular the views of Town Cllrs Atkinson, Savage and Corcoran have certainly stimulated debate. It is fantastic to see that local people (or at least Silsden.net visitors) are enthusiastic in the interests of their (and my) village.

The two most important posts are ‘Things for a prospective town councillor to consider’ and ‘Local elections’ simply because they address and invite comment on how the interests of Silsden and it’s residents may be best served. I will be posting on them soon. Unfortunately both posts/threads are saturated with and distracted by comments on the recent actions of STC/the prospective Party candidates, in particular the Conservative and Independent representatives.

Why?

The fundamental reason, as I see it, stems from the disgraceful actions of the above-mentioned council members. Many correspondents have quite rightly asked for STC members to issue an open apology to Andy Rowley and invite him to address STC in the normal course of town/parish council procedure. Silsden.net is a valuable, easily accessible forum, but the silence of Silsden Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Town Clerk is deafening. In issuing an apology STC would demonstrate a depth of intelligence, understanding and acknowledgement of the democratic process in which they represent the interests of the people of Silsden.

Not to do so will inflict long-term damage on STC’s credibility, the interests of the village and therefore the residents. In the absence of it’s apology, STC will also create a void in it’s relationship with whichever Party is selected in the May elections, if it has not already done so. It has already compromised its relationship with The Conservative representative, Cllr Rowley. It has compromised its relationship with the Independent representative Cllr Naylor despite STC’s apparent endorsement of his objectives. He is not a fool and will not associate himself with controversy unnecessarily.

Silsden Town Council reportedly has four membership vacancies. I cannot see how any member of the community would wish to align themselves with STC’s reported opinions, and in particular the undemocratic and possibly illegal actions of three members.

I recognise the generally excellent community initiatives undertaken by STC, but they need to issue an apology now to Cllr Rowley if it is to have any chance of convincing Silsden residents, political players and the wider public that it is a serious, representative and democratic organisation capable of acting in a professional manner.
