IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : WOT NO GRIT!!! |

Whatever happened to theyellow grit boxes we used to have on the end of our streets? We used to have one at the top by the park and I would grit all down the backs of our streets but it dissapeared a couple of years ago.The paths around Silsden are nearly impossible to walk on today and my neighbour has slipped outside her house and is now in hospital. Its disgusting,I was in Ilkley yesterday and their paths are nicely cleared and gritted,we pay our taxes just the same but Bradford council dont give a damn about us this far away.Outa sight outa mind! |

'ealth 'n' safety? I agree entirely with you, put my name on the list for a grit bin. At least when the weather is bad we could look after ourselves. There were a lot of people walking on Bolton Road this morning because the pavement were more lethal than dodging the cars using the road. If Bradford are not going to grit the roads because it's a low priority at least they should provide grit bins so we can DIY. |

This morning a mature lady slipped and hurt herself outside the paper shop whilst on her way to St James's. Then after the service another lady slipped on the slope( by the Bus stop) entering the car park,it looked as if her wrist was either Broken or dislocated.I hope she can SUE the council for not clearing the pedestrian access to the car park of its sheet ice. |

It is discusting! I'm so fed up today because I'm stuck in house because I daren't go out it's so slippy and am already injured from slipping several times yesterday!!! |
|
| jimmy |
Not sure what we can do about it,Like someone said dont mind doing it myself but we need grit to do it with.Luckily the ambulance that was called brought a bag of grit and spread it around just so they could atend to the poor lady in the ice. |

Is there anywhere you can request having a grit bin? |
|
| firtoffee |
I must agree, come on all you town councillor's get pulling some strings at city hall. The side roads up near the park are lethal there should definately be grit boxes in all areas around Silsden as other posters have already said then we could at least grit our own roads. |
|
| pumbajunior |
from what i heard in the shell garage yesterday if you grit outside your house and someone slips they can sue you if you do nothing they cant |
|
| Peter |
I just want to be able to go down the road in my car without sliding into a car parked on the side of the road. In this weather there are more cars than usual parked / abandoned on the side of the road because they can't get up the hills. Last time the snow became ice on our road the grit lorry made it up our street 5 days later when the ice was melting anyway. Give us a grit bin so we can do it ourselves. It's a bit late for this lot of bad weather, but we should campaign for something to be done before the next lot of cold weather. |

Grit isn't the be all and end all you know. I cleared my paths and the pavement in front of my house with nothing more than a shovel and a stiff brush. A light dusting of ordinary table salt cleared any bits too small or stuck on to brush up. Or you can buy rocksalt for not much dosh from Naylor Myers and the kind people at the silsden depot might even deliver it free if they are passing anyway. |

I seem to remember when I was a kid that's what everyone did jonno ![]() My son has been out doing excatly that for my mother and her neighbour. |

That's the one Bob T, I have clean windows but only 'cos we've not long had 'em replaced. Keep meaning to tell her about you, but everytime I go round she tells me some tale and I forget! |

They gritted our road today by hand, the dustbin lorry comes round tomorrow. |
|

i was thinking earlier how easy it would be for the bin lorries to carry some grit to spread on the side roads that they have to visit but that the gritters never get to |
|
| alan |
According to callers on Radio Leeds, those who were claiming the dole and were able and fit were used to spread grit on the pavements in the old days. |

|
| jimmy |
Can anyone tell me why Dale veiw gets a gritter up there but its a rare occasion that it comes down to Banklansds?Does seem silly when it could do a round route down. |
|

quotei was thinking earlier how easy it would be for the bin lorries to carry some grit to spread on the side roads that they have to visit but that the gritters never get to looks like someone was listening (or maybe reading). the recycling bin wagon just came round & the guys were spreading sand from the back of the wagon with shovels as they collected the recycling |
|
| skippy |
recycling wagon earns the bin wagon costs (simples) |
|
| Dodzi |
No bin or recycling for us yesterday!!! |
|
| ginjo |
If you look on bradford council website under gritting, they have listed which streets are getting done since they were told to cut back.It is lethal at the moment has the rain we have just had has frozen on the road.Cannot expect bin men to come when its like this it is not safe!! If the wagon goes into a skid no telling what damage will be done |
