Item 8 on the agenda of the town council meeting this Thursday, 7 Feb 2008.

8. PARLIAMENT BENCH – To respond to the request from a member of the public that this council remove the bench before summer due to it attracting anti social behaviour especially late in the evening.

You will find the bench at the bottom of Elliott Street. I wonder if the youth would find it so attractive if they knew it was considered a seat for old men to put the world to rights?

if this is removed it could then set a precedent for every bench, wall, gate or other object that kids like to hang around.

Remove the anti social behaviour - NOT the bench!

The community must not 'give in' to the mindless minority. If this is a known trouble spot then I wouild think it should also attract the gaurdians of the law....

Completely Laughable!
Cant believe someone would suggest moving the bench and not cracking down on the people who are causing a nuisance.
imagine.... a country without benches.... 0% crime rate...... mmmmmm
Is it the old gentlemen fighting over murray mints again?

oh by the way the cctv will catch the naughty pensioners in the act.

I thought this bench was put there by fully paid up members of EXIT, i wouldn't want to sit there! Have a look at the lamp post on the corner, there is a very big gouge across it where a truck hit it, if anyone had been sitting on the bench when this happened they would have been dead.
The one person complaining about the bench is also up in arms about the litter being left behind from the customers of the takeaways, if they get their way on the seat the next thing will to get all the shops shut!

The CCTV will have not the slightest effect on the use of this seat, it will not be able to see it from the bottom of Briggate.

The sad thing is that the seat was there before he or even she was!

I never understand how people move in then moan about what's there! It's a bench for goodness sake! People sit on it, congregate round it, so?

Never even seen any kids near it!

That's it now, no takeaways, no benches, curfew at dark for those hooligans under 50.......little rascals should be on their Playstations or whatever they have these days......lock 'em up in dog cages till they're 50!!

Cloggy Dick and his mates would turn in their graves if that bench is removed,t'old man's seat is part of our inheritance.First they take our Police station away and now t'old man's seat. What next?

perhaps the answer would be to move it to the other side of elliot street next to kitchen shop( said tongue in cheek before i get complaints)
or build a decent size wall around it then the beggars can't sit on it.

it seems feelings have been stirred up over this issue, if we're not careful the seat could be over run with the media and people gathering from afar to see this famous landmark.

after reading the link earlier in this forum, it seems it was just over a month ago when we got the bench back in silsden......so...1,how long had it been on holiday? 2)how do we know it will attract antisocial behaviour in summer 3) i was hoping for nothing less than sky news and look north!

have also done some research on this matter, and many years ago the seat was removed by bradford met and after much protest from the residents,( many of whom are no longer with us) was reinstated, i believe a poem was even written about the event.(from a book on the history of silsden) following this, bradford said the bench was always to remain where it was.

The same could be said of most things the TC vote on if you use this logic 'alliecoward'.

But as the town councillors have no pecuniary interest in retaining this bench I am more than confident that they will vote with their conciences and what the vast majority of residents of Silsden would want them to do.

But, also, I have no doubt that, as usual, this resident will have their views listened too.
