danny must have fled after receiving the lowest possible hygiene rating from an inspection

Any star rating for a health check is a load of rubbish.
They are either OK or not. If not then they should be closed down straight away. If OK why leave them open and then give them a bad public score.
If we want a star system for everything then lets have it for:
Driving test? get 5 stars and stick them on your bumper (but you get treble points when caught out, only fair)
solid wood flooring

wahibs do you own a business that has failed an inspection or just do you regularly flip over small issues?

i think a star rating is good for hygiene inspections, it gives those who havent made the top grade the chance to improve rather than closing them down and sending them to the dole office. im sure if some fall below standards there will be proceedures in place for them to clean up their act or sling their act. glad you werent doing the inspections!

As far as I am concerned a food shop is either OK or not. I cannot see how it can be graded. They either pass the inspection or not. No halfway measures, no stars.
I REPEAT, THE STAR SYSTEM IS A LOAD OF RUBBISH.

I agree with wahiba, there should be no star system where health and hygiene issues are concerned. The establishment is either safe or unhygienic and if it is the latter it should be closed down. There is no halfway house. Why should some jumped up quango be able to destroy a business by publishing a star system on food establishments.

BTW I don't agree with SATs either. They narrow the curriculum by concentrating teachers efforts into passing government statistics.

"should we scrap the grading system in schools and say 'you've either passed your exams or you've failed"
Non grading systems of assessment are very common. The driving test is the example most people have direct experience of. The other is the NVQ system based on competence assessment, youcan do it or you cannot. This was trumpeted a few years ago as a great new idea. Actually it was not as all craft based assessments are on this basis.
A grading based on the number of skills passed is not the same as grading quality. The pass/fail or do/cannot do system is known as norm referencing. Perform to the norm and you are through. I do not know if they still do it that way but when I was in the Boy Scouts that was the system.
Grading exams is known as criteria referencing the idea being that marks are awarded because certain criteria have been fulfilled. This leaves plenty of discretion to the examiner so the quality of the results can be interesting.
In theory criteria referencing should allow the individual being examined to show whatthey can do. In practise there is a lot of learning of the criteria and not much education, which explains all the thick kids with a string of GCSEs at grades Cs and Ds. The As and Bs often get there becasue they know it and in a norm system would be the passes.
so, to answer your question I think there should be proper norm reference assessment. It is harder to get 'super' results with and as we all know by observing drivers passing on the day does not mean you can drive. But that is the same for any assessment system, even health checks. what happens next day after the health inspector has given you your 5 stars??
The only way to maintain quality, in any system, is to randomly sample a proportion on a regular basis. This is how quality control works in manufacturing. It does not work like this in education so education inspection is basically a load of bollocks. All those results in the paper are meaningless. I hope the food checks are random, but should either pass or fail, not grade.

"Danny" (not the original Danny) has left Silsden - he now bakes pies in Huddersfield. No doubt the pressure placed on his business by first having to close to clean up and then getting a low star rating have ended his time here in Silsden.
