What is silsden up to in terms of community christmas events, i dont feel the towns residents have bonded as wel as it could do, sure we are plaqued by little yobs that have nothing better to do other than 'chill out' in the park, the community needs to come together, lets get a bit of togetherness happening, we need regular local events and clubs which will unite this great down, what do our 'councillors' do? they are non-existent, sure we here of them around election time but what after that? nothing, silence, i could run the show better than them......

Jimbo, nice of you to offer! there is a vacancy on the town council, you say you can do better, put you money where your mouth is, go alone and join them. You didn't do very much when the hard working group that put up the towns lights were floging themselves to death this last weekend, and i don't suppose you will offer to help them take them down after Christmas either.
Talk is cheap.

iv always been taught in life 'never assume anything' grandad, maybe you will remember that before you make your suggestions.
i knew when i posted the message that the cynics would come crawling out of the woodwork, people like you are holding this town back.
when and where was help required for these lights to be put up?
the advertising is very poor, the townsfolk of silsden need to be made aware of events that go on, i will be putting my name forward for th town council ,which should be aptly named 'the silent council' as we never here of anything that takes place.....

jimbo the Town Council is NOT silent. They have been publishing meeting agendas and minutes on this site for years www.silsden.net/town_council/index.htm It is interesting to see how many of the general public attend the meeting, not many! This forum is a way to provide our councillors feedback but like many things in life people will not get off their butts unless it concerns them. If you want to help the community Why not go to a council meeting and offer your services, but don't complain if you have not contributed.

Well said Fred.

But you should have also mentioned Keighley News, Craven Herald, Telegraph and Argus, all of which regularly report the town council meetings and work of the town council.

It should also be noted that several councillors make serious contributions to the community through being school governors, members of the Youth Council, etc etc and give a great deal of their time fighting the cause of Silsden.

UNLIKE the district councillors town councillors do not get expenses for what they do, except the odd bit of petrol money to go to meetings away from Silsden. They give their time because they want to contribute to the community not sit on their backsides and criticise.

As regards the lights, how can we fail to see what's happening? The VOLUNTEERS putting the lights up last weekend were visible for all to see!

its nice to see a bit of passion from you folk, i dont doubt that the silent council do get work done and belive me, i am a huge supporter of anything that can be done to serve the people of silsden.
i guess my comments centred around our 'thug friends' that congregate around the park and memorial, i do not intend to start another debate like the one earlier in the year, however i am keen to see what the council are doing to rid the town of these unwanted kids, i have witnessed with my own eyes our 'community support officer' chatting to them like friends.....zero tolerance required, lets find their parents and give them curfews, where are the police? where are the cctv?

The "council" supported the formation of the Youth Council and try to find positive ways to encourage the kids/youth. They use positive words to encourage the kids and not call them "yobs" and other derogatory and negative terms!

They encouraged and participated in the skate and bike park, as well as the MUGA on Elliott Street playing fields. They've also fought for an improvement in the youth provision from Bradford.

The question should also be what do the churches and residents of Silsden do for the youth of the town? Other than criticise?

You don't have to be on the council to start a youth group!

Why don't you call an election for the position on the town council "jimbo" and stand on the platform of sorting the town out?

there are none so blind as them that don't want to see, nor so deaf as them that don't want to hear.
Before you complain about what is not being done why don't you find out why? then you can talk from a position upon which you might be respected.
The town council tried to get an alchol exclusion zone for parts of silsden and were stopped by bradford council. the pcso can't impose any curfew on anyone, he can't disperse the youths simply because the are there, when they are not breaking any laws. if you think it is so easy (and you sound as though you think it is,) then why not become a pcso or even an unpaid special, then you can try it for yourself.

The Youth Council was set up, with guidance by the youth themselves. Posters were put up in the co op and the town hall. The committee is elected by a democratic voting system from those who attended the meeting.I am sure some of our memebers are also Scouts/Guides: but nobody has automatic entry due to any current position! I am not sure what your quote re loonies meant but would suggest a little research of the facts prior to posting might be in order

this post has been edited 2 time(s)

So it came as a surprise "not a southerner" that we have a Youth Council? Not bad as they have been in existance, and well publicised, for several years!

Why "not a southerner" do the scouts and guides have to be on the Youth Council to make a contribution to the general youth of Silsden? Indeed, why should the scouts and guides have an automatic right to membership, PC or not?

Massive credit should be given to the kids/youth of the Youth Council for getting off their backsides and doing something.

Something the older generation in this town would do to emulate! And I say that as an old wrinkley myself!

We only earn the right to criticise by actually making the effort ourselves!

shocked 8O So Jimbo, you are a huge supporter of anything that can be done to serve the people of Silsden. I for one would be very interested to hear just what you HAVE done. Is this support actually doing something, or is it confined to talking about it with some mates over a beer or two? Come on, put up or shut up, anyone can criticise, the difficult part is being constructive and not destructive. Make sensible, practical affordable suggestions that will help Silsden as you say you want to do, or stop gripping and shut up.

i have done a great deal for this town, campaigned for cctv, campaigned to stop the bypass being built through waterside, campaigned to stop eric dawson (alcoholic councillor who has done nothing for us) from being elected, campaigned for better street maintenence, more street lights etc what is the capacity of silsden 8000? something like that, however my point is this, only a small minority actually chip in and help, so my initial point was....lets get these lazy silsdeners more involved with the community, lets advertise events and hold more community minded events, and lets drive out the local yobs that seek to bring this town down with them.

they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom

A very good question alan!
It looks to me like another lot of hot are from jimbo, next he will say he doesn't know about the extravaganza to be held next wednesday night, or the new community contact point being opened in the town hall.
Seek and you shall find. ask and it will be given to you., was a favourit saying of my mother's.

seek and you shall find?
are you telling me that the silent council's expect people to find out about these events themselves? utter rubbish, the whole point of advertising is to make people aware, by taking it to them, if you expect people to 'seek and find' you will only generate interest from a minority.

i am the future of silsden, you will hear about me a great deal more in the very near future, im going to take this town by storm, the streets of silsden will be safe.

Jimbo, answer alans question.
It appears to me you want spoon feeding, the information about the far from silent town council is not only on this web site; it is in the notice board at the front door of the town hall.
You wont get very far storming the streets of Silsden if you can’t even find the town hall, (it’s on kirkgate, by the way.) this town has had people like you many times before, they practice seagull politics.

Alan, Jimbo is a chicken!
He is scared to answer your questions, so like a good Tory he changes the subject. Sorry Jimbo this is Yorkshire; up here we don’t like jumped up no bodies trying to pick a fight, causing bother, then running away to hide, you can’t hide here.
So put up or shut up.

He would make a good politician!

Leave him to his own little merry world!
