IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Tesco pulls out of Silsden supermarket project -- but developers go ahead with planning bid |
|
Peter |
Tesco pulls out of Silsden supermarket project -- but developers go ahead with planning bid Silvermantle is continuing with its planning application and hopes Bradford Council will grant permission at a meeting of its planning panel on January 29. Permission would last three years, allowing Silvermantle to market the site to several major supermarket chains as the UK’s economic situation improves. The plan for a Tesco store in Silsden has attracted objections from residents – including a petition led by Wendy Neville and Anna Young -- claiming it could badly hit existing Silsden shops such as the Co-op minimarket. Residents and councillors have also raised traffic concerns, and question the need for a second new supermarket following approval earlier this for a nearby Aldi store. What ever the outcome of this land, something badly needs doing as it is an eyesore on entering Silsden. I understand that the land is commercial/industrial, pity they couldn't build houses there, although I guess flood plain might be a problem, either way will someone get their fingers out and get the area ship shape! Pity more couldn't have been done to salvage the old building. |

Opens the way now for our top quality local supermarket, MORRISONS, to make the move! Would be brilliant if they built on this land, especially now that their cheaper prices are giving Aldi a run for their money! Surely not even our STC could object to Morrisons or could they? |

morrisons are not doing very well either and there is one in Keighley and small ones in ilkley and steeton. I think a waitrose might do well, not many of those about and they are higher end of the market and doing well.Personally I think morrisons is a bit low quality |

Of surprised me that Morrisons built mini markets in Ilkley & Steeton. If I HAD TO choose one of them, I think it would be Booths. Wages are not too bad, probably best of all of them, good quality and locally sourced. Morrisons are Generally poor quality, although they do stock a surprisingly good range of real ales in the Keighley store. |

What a shame Tesco driven out of Town and they wont be coming back. A once in a life time chance gone. Thats what all the shoppers will continue to do. Drive over the Canal bridge to other Towns to shop. |

Nothing should be done with this site until the Local Authority have looked at suitable sites in Silsden for a new combined primary school that could also offer leisure/sports services to the local community. The town is in urgent need for a new school- the local authority and the town council would be letting down the children of silsden if a new school was not classified as a priority for new developments in the area. Any new school would free up the areas currently used by the existing schools for housing development. There wouldn't be any major increase in traffic because the traffic at the school run time is already there. Anybody trying to negotiate Elliot Street and Hothfield Street at School time knows exactly what the school run means to them. |

School seems an excellent idea. Playing fields next door, that cannot be sold off by school. A path and foot/cycle bridge over the canal could mean the fit kids could walk/cycle to school away from the raod. Fat ones would obviously still need to be taken by car. Has anyone considered that if the site gets planning permission for a retail outlet then the Co-Operative could also consider moving out of the town centre. With all the wacking the big boys have recieved at the hands of Aldi and Lidle remember that the Co-Operative got out of big shops some time ago and concentrated on smaller convenience stores. Interestingly that was a good move as it is as much the size and convenience of Lidl and Aldi that has increased their popularity. Pricewise they are not much cheaper, and in terms of quality some of their stuff leaves a lot to be desired. Booths, Waitrose and Keelham being built at Skipton cost more and provide better. Generally with most food you get what you pay for. It will be interesting to see what results from all this. |

Guess who said Tesco would just be for Cobbydalers but now claims its for surrounding areas too? “This store will serve the needs of the people of Silsden. It’s not a major store." www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/11479494.Division_over_effects_of_new_Tesco_on_Silsden_shops/ "The people of Silsden and surrounding areas deserve choice.” www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/11694979.Councillor_speaks_against_Silsden_supermarket_protestors/ |

I agree with davidaloud. A combined primary and junior school on this site would be an excellent solution to all problems |

Why is the Co-Operative always referred to as a mini-market. It is a small supermarket. The need to comply with the stupid Sunday trading act means it certainly is not 'mini' |

It looks like the entrance to Silsden will now look a total mess for many years to come. And we can now kiss the footbridge over the bypass good bye too. Even little Steeton has a Morrisons. Why Because Morrisons were welcomed with open arms by the residents. A few in Silsden have spoilt it for the majority. When will they ever learn. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) it certainly was`nt a few in silsden that made tesco pull out it was the disasterous state of the company, and yes the idea of building a school there seems a great idea,we are due one as the last one was dropped because of a decision to join south craven school instead, but the numbers of children now means we need a school and that has got to be a big enough site ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

quote And we can now kiss the footbridge over the bypass good bye too. Why should a Section 106 agreement goto paying for a footbridge which the Highways Agency should have arranged when the road was built and seeing they did not they should be paying for it now. Any S106 agreement for something built in Silsden should be spent in Silsden for the community. Not funding Government projects like footbridges!!!! |

Having said that, if the site was CPO'd for a school, it would bring some (not many) jobs to Silsden and would necessitate a footbridge. Whether the education department takes this view remains to be seen. Either way, the schools available in Silsden are too over populated and something has to give! |

Drive over the Canal bridge to other Towns to shop. Really Alan? A Once in a Lifetime Chance? Sure you're not overstating things there? It's only a supermarket not a trip around the pacific rim in the QE2. I love hyperbole as much as the next person but give it a rest once in a while, eh? You think they'll drive straight past the new Aldi? Aldi I'm sure would beg to differ and probably have more experience with these things than you do. I certainly won't pass by, why waste the time and fuel going into Keighley or elsewhere? You can do a proper weeks shop in Aldi without selling your first-born as well. I'd much rather a school or something else to benefit Silsden than two supermarkets facing each other. I think Tesco need to get their own house in order before they expand any further. |

For those interested The Silvermantle planning application for a supermarket on the Riverside Mills site is to be discussed at the next meeting of the Regulatory and Appeals Committee to be held on 2 April 2015 at City Hall Bradford at 10.00 am. PS This is the same meeting where the housing application for 62 dwellings off Bolton Road will be discussed. |

Adrian Naylor and myself will be attending on silsdens behalf, questions we are asking today are why is this meeting not being held in silsden when only 2 items are on the adgenda? the houses up Bolton rd as peter says is also being heard, both are up for approval, this one is recommended to be approved by delegated powers if any thing crops up and the committee cannot agree (smells of a stitch up to me) we need infrastructure not another supermarket. bfds ransome strip of land cannot be anything to do with such decision surley? |

When are Bradford going to wake up and smell the coffee - Silsden needs a new school and this is about the only suitable site left in the area. Come on guys if anything else is built on this site you will have failed future families in the area. |

quoteGood result! Now time to put something sensible there like a school or small modern offices. Its only a good result if we get something from it like a masterplan which is for the benefit of everyone. Waste of time talking about odd sites here and there |

Master plan....master plan! But I thought we were talking about Bradford council! I think they only have one plan and it isn't in the benefit of Silsden!! |
