Site now vacated by Pennine Playgrounds. Fence down and excavation works currently in progress. Anyone know who the new owner / construction company is and whether their plans are per those approved some time ago? |

was the old mill dam.Found an article from probably the late 50's As far as the Corn Mill is concerned, Mr Stanley Wass, managing director of Herbert Wass Ltd, stated that his firm had not used water from the dam since the outbreak of war in 1939, after which the grinding of meal from grain was halted, and the firm had to distribute to customers the feeding stuff compounds supplied by the Government agencies.Mr Wass looks forward to the time the dam is filled in and water no longer dribbles through the old leaking pipes in the Corn Mill. "In my fathers day he could fill the chute with grain, set the 24ft water wheel and grinder in motion, and leave the concern to run by itself" recalled Mr Wass."He could return in six hours and about 5cwt of grain would be ground and no harm done if the chute was empty.But that is too slow for today." "To get the wheel turning at full speed we needed the pressure of a full dam, and in the old days we had plenty of fun with the Becks Mill people. If we didnt let enough water down the beck they could not start the mill engine and they would telephone us in no uncertain terms.Sometimes the late William Hartley or Percy Barker would come up, using all kinda of threats if we didnt let some water down.We had to rus up to Stakes Beck and turn the water down the beck instead of down the goit to our mill. We used to run to the mill at lunchtime, until the ten minute past one siren used to sound at Taylors Mill.That was the signal for one of us to dash up to turn the water into the beck.By 1.20, when the Becks Mill was due to start, the water had just reached there in time" Asked if he would give the water wheel a final run for sentiments sake Mr Wass replied "I wouldnt turn it now for £1,000.After being stopped all this time it would shake the old building to bits" |
